Smile Information on immigrating please?

G'day Folks

I am hoping someone would be kind enough as to point me in the right direction. Myself and my partner have been seriously considering moving permanently to Oz for a few years now, but I have always wanted to ensure I was in the right occupation to make such a big move.
Currently I am studing as an Adult Nurse in Scotland and I have less than 2 years left of my course before I am qualified. My partner is a Mechanical Engineer/Turner and has vast experience in his trade. We are aged 24 (myself) and 31. We are not married or engaged as yet... But we would be looking to apply for a Visa within the next 2 years.
I have been trying to find out as much information as possiblt to start preparing for such a life changing move but I really dont know where to start. I am aware that nurses and engineers are currently welcome in Australia (I hope) however I have no idea of what Australia Migration Authoritys use as criteria.
Can anyone help. Can myself and my partner apply together to het into australia and what other factors do they consider? I had been told it was £3000 at least in a bank account etc etc... I realise I dont have much information at this stage.

Is there anyone who has recently moved to Australia and would be kind enough to advise me on the process? How did you go about it, what was required etc.. .Etc...

We have booked another trip to Oz for next year to try and pin point best place to live. We are looking for somewhere with warm climate most of year. An area where would be an ideal place to start a family. Somewhere close to the coast or beach. Because we are moving over with no immediate family I would prefer somewhere with a large ex pat community, just to ensure that we will be able to adapt to life and make friends etc easily....

Please give as much info as you can on migrating. I thank you in advance

Thanks

Corinne

hi corinne,i dont know about other visa,s but the main 175 skilled independant does not require you to have capital, or proof of, i beleive parent or student visa,s may require this but obviously neither of these will apply to yourselfs.
the first thing you,ll need to do is find out if your occupation/s is on the skilled list for a 175. which is for permanent residency Department of Immigration and Citizenship ,
this in turn gives you greater freedom than some other visa,s but there are loads depending on yr curcumstances. visa,s normally range from 6mths - 18mths to process depending on the visa type you apply for.
only one of you normally needs to appy as the main applicant and in yr case i assume you will have a de-facto relationship visa but i,m afraid i dont know much about either nurses or de-facto visa,s. i am sure one of the moderators will also answer this thread and are much better informed than myself. this will bump your post back to the top at least.
you can manage the visa application yourselfs or hire an agent, that really is a matter of personal choice, (and money as they can be quite pricey) we personally choose to use an agent as it is very expensive to mess up if you,re not 100% on whats what.
if you decide to also go down this route there are lots to choose from and there are a few that come on this site and are highly recommended. good luck with whatever you decide. bear in mind also that some agents chanrge more than others so it,s worth ringing around.
the best place to start is the site add i wrote above, this will get you started. any other info you,re not sure about if you look at the top of the page there is a search tab and will bring up any past posts on the subject you search.
best of luck

Hi Corinne and welcome to the forum.

The only advice I can give you is to read the stickies at the top of the Australian country forum. You will find loads of helpful information there.

Good luck with your plans.

Michelle

Hi Corinne,

Welcome to the forum.

The first thing you need to find out is:-

1. Are your skills are on the SOL/MODL list?
2. Do you have enough points?
3. Your age (you can't be older than 44 at the time of submission of main application (which you won't be!!)
4. Your qualifications/work experience

You will find details of the skills list and a points test in the sticky at the top of the forum page "please read....".

Once you've established the above, the next thing is to work out which visa you intend to apply for. Personally I always recommend phoning a migration agent to ask their advice, their first consultation is usually free without obligation. If you choose to use an agent, you can either use them for the whole process (skills assessment and main application) or just one part. Make sure that the agent is part of MARA (Migration Agents Registration Authority) - a link for this will also be found in the sticky thread. Ring around at least 3 agents to compare what they will do for you and how much they will charge.

Any other questions, just ask, there is always someone here that will be able to help and give you advice.

Dolly

Hello,

Thank you so much for all your help and advice folks. I really appreciate the pointers. It's such a complicated process.

Does anyone have any suggestions as where would be best place to locate. We were thinkin of Perth, has anyone settled here?

Kind Regards and thanks again

hi, bit confused, did you mean 44 or 45 ? my hubbie was 44 and 6 months when we applied, we were a bit worried about the 45 yr cap, our agent told us as long as the MAIN application went in before his 45th it was fine, it could be 2/3 weeks before and would still be fine, which obviously it was as we got our visa.

For a general skilled offshore visa you must be aged under 45 on the date the visa application is delivered to the Skilled Processing Centre. And for those that are really cutting it fine, this is based on the time and date in eastern Australia, not in the UK!

Best regards.
