Default Possible relocation to Sydney

Hi,

I have been contacted by a firm in Sydney that is need of people with some certifications that I currently have. I am looking for some advice as to the whole expat job process when moving to Australia. Is there a norm as far as the process for interviewing with a company halfway across the globe? Is this done via email, telephone and video conference? or is it normal to make a visit prior to accepting a job?

Is there a reference calculator as far as cost of living and salary that people recommend?

Thank you for your advice,

Bob

Hi Bob,

Welcome to the forum.

I think the interviewing process depends on the company and what they have set up. Certainly some forum members have had interview by video conference.

If you check out the posts at the top of the forum there is a "Cost of living" thread and in the "Please read..." there is a tax calculator that may help. There are also property websites to give you an idea about renting or buying (depending on your visa).

I don't think that anyone has given costs for Sydney yet, but it's an expensive city....

Regards,
Karen

Hi there Bob,

My husband had 2 telephone interviews and a video conference interview, and got the job. As Karen said, it all depends on the company.

Thank you both for the replies, I have been reading a lot of the threads on the site, very informative.
Dolly, so your husband never made a trip to meet the employer prior to accepting the position?
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,

That's right. The first time he met his employers was about a month after the interviews when we were on our visa validation trip. We went to their offices and came away with a contract to look over. We came back, tied things up in the UK, and headed off back to Oz a month later. Not ideal, and wasn't our plan because we still had our house to sell, but couldn't pass up the opportunity.
