Smile Does age a barrier to get at job?

Good day!

I intend to migrate to Australia and is now in the process of applying the visa through agent in KL, Malaysia. I'm in my early 40s and has over 15 years working experience in field of IT as senior management level. Does age a barrier to get a job? My choice of states are Perth, Hobart, Melbourne and Sydney. Could anyone give me a good advice?

TQ.

Hi Walter C,

Welcome to the forum.

I've moved your post to a thread of it's own since I'm sure quite a few people will be interested in the answer.

You can check out the job websites such as seek and jobserve.

For IT Sydney and Melbourne are the main areas although it can depend on your specialty.

There is an age discrimination act, and my husband didn't have any difficulties (he's nearly 44) although that wasn't in the area of IT.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Karen,

TQ for your quick reply. I have been to many of the OZ websites recently to look for all relevant information pertaining migration to Australia. Yes you are right, I was adviced by my migration consultant to focus these areas especially for IT jobs. I specialised in IT Project Mannagement on application functionals as well as software development for Microsoft Axapta ERP. I guess there are a lot of co. using this ERP System in Australia other than big name like SAP or JDEdward.

I have learned that one need to have at least 6 months window period for local job seach and application. My intention once I get my PR is to look for a job, accumulate 2 years in Australia to apply for permanent PR. At the same time to establish my career there and adjust to local way of life and culture. I intend to own a house before planning to move my entire family members here in Australia. I've been to Sydney couple of times and as well Gold Coast. Sydney is warmer than Melbourne I supposed. Perth is a bit too warm during summer. I really love NZ very much - nice screnary, low density, peaceful life. How about Adelaide? Can anyone share your experience?

TQ and God Bless !

You now have to wait 4 years before you can apply for citizenship. We missed out by a couple of months (I think the rule changed July time last year).

Yes Dolly you are right it's 4 years now. Since it's from time of when you became a permanent resident are you sure you need 4 years? Obviously any newcomers will have to do 4 years (sorry guys) but I'm taking it from when we got the visa approval which was before 1st July 2007 even though we didn't move here until 19th July 2007.

Regards,
Karen
