Question dependant child immigration rules

Hello

I am new to the forum. We are hoping to get a visa to live in Australia on the skilled persons visa. We have just applied for trade recognition and once we have that we will be applying for our visa. I am assuming this is the right way to go about things???
My question is I have 2 sons one is 14 so he is a dependant the other has just turned 18 and he is working as an apprentice joiner with his dad and so is still in effect in education as he attends college on block release, but obviously is getting paid and working as an apprentice.

I have researched on the internet and the DIAC website but I just cant seem to find an answer.
Will I be able to apply for my 18 year old son on our visa application as a dependant child? If not how would I go about this as he is obvioulsy still dependant on us and I dont want to leave him and he wants to come with us I am at a loss as to what to do. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated
Krasy

Hi Krasy,

Welcome to the forum.

On the application for for a skilled - independent visa is says that if a child is 18 years or over, and still a dependant, you have to prove this by showing that they are totally reliant on you for financial support/food/shelter/clothing etc. and that you've provided this for a significant amount of time. Also that, as parents, you are the only people that your son is reliant upon.

A migration agent would be able to point you in the right direction as to how you 'prove' this. We have a couple of agents who post on here, why not send them a PM as ask their advice (Alan Collet or Liana Allen). Another contact is George Lombard (who we used).

Default teenagers!

Hi, just a quick response.
My understanding is that aged over 18 yrs, applicants must be in full time education, or apprenticed, which i am told counts as education, and therefore a dependent.
Best to check with Australia house, but that is what i was told! Good luck
