Smile Considering Brisbane

hi all

I'm really enjoying the threads on this. I have to say I've found this the most useful resource, as we are considering moving to Brisbane. I have to be honest though I think it is going to take a lot of planning and we are only at the early stages having just printed off the Visa apllication to have a better look at it.

I will have lots of questions i'm sure and hopefully I will bring advice also. I do have family in brisbane, my partner is a Carpenter and training at the moment to be a health and safety officer, So our move would be when he has finished his final exam. But he has been a carpenter for over 27 years. but my main concern is that I have no qualifications and seem to be short on points although I have been an administrator for over 15 yrs, so this concerns me.

So any info or advice would be appreciated. Thanks looking forward to see what happens.

Hi Rioella,

Welcome to the forum.

Have a look at the VETASSESS website:

VETASSESS - Vocational Education Training and Assessment Services

I think that you will have had to have been working in the profession for the last 12 months - is your partner doing the H&S training alongside the carpentry? If not, how long has it been since he's done carpentry?

I'd suggest getting the advice of an agent just to check. The first consultation is usually free, without obligation. It'll take 5 minutes and save a lot of time trying to work out the right path.

Dolly

hi Dolly,

I will take a look at the website you suggested, thanks. And as for my Partner I am lucky enough that he has been employed as a Carpenter for over 27 years and is doing it alongsie his Health and Safety training as his job is paying for it! But do you think it will be enough. I promise I will contact and Agent Im just dreading the FEES!

Hi Rioella,

If your partner is doing his training concurrently, then he should be OK to apply to have his skills assessed. He doesn't have to have formal qualifications, just show what he's learned over the years and how he learned it etc.

Have you checked your points on just your husbands skills? Maybe you won't need your skills to be taken into account?

Also, a consideration is age. You cannot be over 45 at the time of submitting your main application.

Re agents. If you choose to, you could use one to help with your skills assessment and then do the main application yourselves. The most difficult bit is the assessment, the main application is a doddle in comparison! We used an agent for both parts, just for peace of mind really. We desperately wanted to move over to Australia so we wanted to make sure everything was correct at the time of submitting. Also, our age was against us...we were a few months off 45 when our application was submitted and couldn't afford for anything to go wrong with the skills assessment and needed to pass first time as we wouldn't have had the time to re-apply.

Basically, if you tick the three boxes, you should be good to go to apply.

1. You are under 45 years of age
2. Your occupation
3. You have the skills and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

It's mindblowing how much there is to all this, but take it a step at a time and you'll be fine. There's always someone on here that will answer your questions.

Dolly
