Question Dreading the medical. What are they really like?

Hi There,
Can anyone let me know what to expect with the medical. I'm quite over weight and I take daily medication for migraines. Is this likely to affect my chances? Otherwise I'm fit and healthy.
Cheers Kezza

Hi Kezza,

The medicals are not as bad as I thought. I had been dreading them for months before we had to do them.

Basically, all they do is check your weight/height/blood pressure/blood test/chest x-ray - just basic things like that. It was months and months of worrying for nothing.

If your BMI is over 40 then they will ask for more tests but I've known people with a BMI of 45 and pass.

I used this website to check my BMI Calculate your BMI - Standard BMI Calculator

Re your medication, just get your doctor to write a letter saying your migraines are under control using medication.

Have you got your medicals booked?

Dolly

Default Medicals are fine.

Welcome to the forum!

Medicals are fine, the worst bit about them is paying for them! Nothing to be nervous about at all, its just like a check up. You will have to do a urine sample too, which we found quite amusing because there are few places where they do the medicals for australia so we had to go to a certain surgery. The one we went to there were loads of us and when we went to the toilet to pee they ask you to put your name on with the labels in the cubicle and put it on the shelf, of course then you get to see everyone elses urine too which is highly amusing but quite embarassing too!

Only my husband (main applicant) was asked for a urine sample, both our boys and me never had to do one.

Hey that's strange Dolly, we all had to do the urine samples (me and the 3 kids although hubby is the main applicant).

But yes they are nothing at all to worry about, just a basic check up!

Hi Kezza,

I was technically obese when I did the medical and that was after losing about 2 stone in weight! Everything else was normal though and I mentioned to the GP I was worried about if my weight would affect our chances. He said he didn't know who did get through after the medicals were submitted but knocked off some pounds for my shoes and clothes since they looked heavy I got through without being asked for more tests and there are much larger women than me around here! As long as you won't be drain on the medical services they tend to let you through in my experience.

So don't worry - I know easier said than done.

Regards,
Karen
