Default Request for advice about I.T jobs in Adelaide

Hi.

My wife and I are just starting the process of applying to move from the UK to Australia. She is a nurse and the main applicant. We have to decide at some point which area to apply for and we have pretty much narrowed it down to either Perth or Adelaide. My wife says it doesn't make much difference to her either way.

My job is in printer repairs and before that I worked on I.T helpdesks. We like the sound of Adelaide and it seems to be cheaper as well, but when I look at the job sites for work in Adelaide it all seems to be contract work, often just 3 months. The I.T job situation looks better in Perth but everything else points to Adelaide. We don't even mind the number of churches there

I'd appreciate any advice about I.T jobs in Adelaide because searching job sites may not tell the whole story. Thank you.

Hi David,

Welcome to the forum.

Personally I prefer Adelaide to Perth but it depends on what temperatures you like since Perth is usually hotter.

I don't know a great deal about IT in Adelaide because for me if I couldn't work from home (IT analyst programmer JDE World) I would have had to go to Melbourne or Sydney. I'm a contractor too and winding down that side of the business (and have a contract with a company in the UK).

You could try calling some job agencies to see if they give you a clearer picture, or try your hand to something else when you get here. My husband was a gardener in the UK but now he's a trainee used car salesman. Of course it depends on your visa as to how much flexibility you have with your job.

Regards,
Karen

Well Adelaide is a very small place, basically a country town and they like it that way. The IT industry is small there and getting smaller now that EDS is pulling out KAZ (Telstra subsid) are shrinking like there's no tomorrow. Getting a job as a nurse is easy, they are in huge demand across Australia. IT also is at its lowest unemployment rate. When we moved from the UK we went to the Adelaide Hills, exceedingly beautiful, only 20 minutes away from the airport and CBD - it was fantastic but I found that I was on a plane to Melbourne and Sydney for IT work most of the time hence we moved. So we moved to Melbourne where IT is in ever increasing demand. Perth is a long way away from everything and some people say a back water. Sydney is over rated and over priced.

If you don't need to work and enjoy wine then Adelaide is a great place, if you need to earn a crust in IT I'd suggest looking at Melbourne...

Hi there,

I agree with kaz101, if you're looking to continue your career in IT, then the best places are Melbourne and Sydney. Not saying that you can't in Perth or Adelaide, but you won't have as many opportunities.

Hi there, and thank you all very much for your replies. We've been going through the I.T jobsites for Melbourne and I see just what you mean. We didn't put Melbourne down in our favourites because the weather seemed better in Perth and Adelaide but we're kind of having second thoughts now.

We have a few weeks to decide so we'll carry on looking, but Melbourne is probably favourite at the moment. I'm glad I asked the question because your advice has been very helpful. I'll let you know what happens. Thank you.

We were originally going to move to Perth. Did all the background work, checked out schools, areas to live/property prices etc (well as much as I could in the UK) but discovered that the job prospects were much better in Sydney or here in Melbourne.

Didn't choose Sydney because property was very expensive.

Absolutely love it here and wouldn't choose anywhere else to live. We get the four seasons, summer can be hot but not all the time so you do get some respite before the next bout of hot weather hits. Haven't been through a winter here yet but I've been told it gets no where near as cold as back in the UK.

Well Dolly, so far this morning we have had rain, sleet and snow - much of it horizontal because of the high winds. In the last couple of months we've had gales, regular frosts and fog. I've just looked out the wind and saw a small, plastic plant-pot swirling round and round the garden.

My wife has spent much of the morning looking at the nursing sites for Melbourne and she's quite impressed by their technology and education.

Good grief!! It's hard to imagine how awful the weather in the UK is at the moment. Just keep saying to yourselves that you're coming into spring and we're coming into autumn so you should hopefully be heading for better weather before too long (well I am trying to be positive .

Good luck with the research on nursing.
