Default Australian Expo

Hi,

I am new to this forum! Has anyone been to an Oz Expo in the UK before? I am going this weekend to one at Australia House in London and am not sure what to expect! It sounds pretty formal! I had to apply for an invitation, I am only allowed to attend at a specific time slot and can't bring anyone or anything with me apart from a cv and bottle of water!

I did get offered an invitation as I have a skill they require and am within the age range.

I just don't know what to expect! Does anyone have any experience of this or advice? Thanks x

Hi monkeybum,

Welcome to the forum.

I have been to an Oz expo but not the kind that you are talking about. I went to a big one down in Sandown some years ago where there were seminars, agents, movers, people from different States etc. It was really good and we got lots of info there.

I would go with a list of questions that you would like answered (and if you look around on this forum you'll find lists from others ).

Good luck and let us know what happens.
Karen

From personal experience if you are in the IT sector and specifically looking for a job, these expos are probably not the place to go. We've been to Sandown twice, Earls court once and the Australia House event once. At all of the events no-one was interested.

On saying that, if you're looking for info on removers/money matters/migration agents/etc etc then it's great place for getting the relevant info.

Thanks for the fast reply! No I'm not in IT I'm an allied healthcare professional so there seems to be a lot of stands that are healthcare related which is great!

I will have to prepare some questions... ! At the moment I'm not sure if I want to move permenently to Oz so I have a lot of info to find out :-)

Hi
Yes, I havebeen to a lot of them. I will be at the one in Coventry on the 11 and 12 of October 2008. It is going to be at Stoneleigh Park Exhibition Centre. Has anyone been to this one? I might be speaking at one of the seminars there but the organisers are yet to finalise the final speakers. Can anyone tell me what the Coventry Immigration Expo is like? I have not been to that one before. Apparently it is quite good. Some of the banks will be there and a number of helpful others. Apparently people say it is good because you get to speak to the companies without having to fight the crowds. Well, we will see in October.
I have hosted stands at Sandown before and at Recruitment expos in London. It's all much the same to me. Lots and lots of people touting their wares and lots and lots of people trying to get as much information as possible.
Bye for now.

Hi monkeybum (I love that name!),

If you're in the health sector then you're in a really good position. The whole of Australia is desperate for people in that field.

Let us know how you get on.

Nice to know someone else went too! I went and they were 50/50 with me... as I am graduating this year and won't have paid work experience as an occupational therapist representatives of some states said this didn't matter and I could work as a new graduate as I am on the top of their most wanted list. Some said I need 6 months, 1 year or 2 years experience before I could comtemplate getting sponsered. I came away more confused than I went in... ha ha!!!

I did get loads of contact email addresses and advice, and it was nice to hear people say they do want me over there!! The places that said I would be able to come over and work after graduation were Queensland, NSW, Melbourne and Tasmania. However one lady did say that to do this required fast tracking my visa ? Therefore I would have to work in rural areas with not much going on!
I am still unsure as to which visa I need, how I go about getting sponsered/getting a job... I guess thats what the email addresses are for!

Hi there monkeybum,

My husband and i went to this expo only a few years ago in London. We felt it a bit of a waste of time really because we were not looking for sponsorship. My husband and i were going for permanent residency to Australia and because of my husbands trade we did not have to be tied to an area of Australia which we have heard happens to people who go for sponsorship. Often it is the only way to get in but if you have a required skill then try for permanent residency first most definately.
You will find useful contacts at the expo, we had done alot of research by the time we went to the expo.

Hope that helps.............................!
