Default CHEF'S really wanted in AUS ?

Hi all,
I heard so many times, that there are a lot of opportunities as very well experienced, Austrian chef.
As I searched now for some weeks, it looks to me - there are a lot of advertisments, but everyone just looking for employees with residential or PR visa status.
Can anyone advise, how to find companies who are willing to sponsor the visa ?
I am 40, married, 1 daughter and working actually in Singapore for a German company. As I travelled all over the world the past 16 yrs, now the time is coming to look for a final place - and this I always planed in AUS, have not choosen a place yet, but don't like snow.

As I saw now, even if it's governement sponsered, I have to pay 2.060.- 1st installment, and then again 2.060.- as 2nd one !?
That's a lot of money for 3 person = 12.360.- !!! That's very hard stuff....

Thanks for any idea
Robert

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Austria is a funny destination to pick if you don't like snow.

What nationality are you? This will have a big impact on just how hard it will be to get into any country in the EU. Austria is also particularly sensitive to "all the foreigners" in their midst - though some nationalities make things easier than others.

I would expect that Austrian chefs are not exactly in short supply in Austria, either. Usually things go better if you can claim a skill that is in short supply in your target country. Makes it easier to justify hiring a foreigner (which is what an employer will have to do to even consider your application).
Cheers,
Bev

Default AUS vs A

Hi,
maybe I posted something wrong. I am Austrian citizen and would like to work in Australia.
I don't like cold weather or snow - that's why I am in Asia many years.

Regards
Robert

Whoops, my bad... sorry.

My French penpal once "corrected" me when I told her that my cousin had married an Austrian. She couldn't believe I didn't mean "Australian." (No faith in us Americans to learn languages, I guess...)

How about I move this thread over to the Australian section and see what our Ozzie expats can come up with?
Cheers,
Bev

Hi Roblei,

You'll probably need to find an agent specialising in finding work, since you are correct that the usual job adverts already expect the applicant to have a visa here.

You can also be sponsored by a State, for example Victoria has head chefs and chefs on their sponsorship list at:
Skilled - Regional Sponsorship Eligibility List

It really depends on where you want to move to since I don't know if the sponsorship would be for regional areas, and in Victoria some regional areas have snow so you'd need to avoid them

Hope that helps,
Karen

Hi there,

Chefs are on the SOL (Skilled Occupation List : http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1121i.pdf) and it looks like you would get the full 60 points (ASCO 3322-11 Chef). So, if you meet the criteria re points, qualifications, age etc you shouldn't have a problem in getting a visa.

You’ll need to do a skills assessment which can be really tricky. I’d phone an agent to get some advice, the first consultation should be free and they’ll tell you which type of visa to go for. workplace.gov.au - 1 Skills assessment for people intending to migrate to Australia

As you are an Austrian, you’ll need to do an IELTS test as well: IELTS - English for International Opportunity

Most people get their visas and then move over to Australia. It is quite difficult to find a company who will sponsor as they generally require people with Permanent Residence status. It’s worth checking out recruitment agencies (see sticky thread “PLEASE READ. Useful websites..” for some agency links). They may know companies who would be willing to sponsor. Or email direct companies you’d like to work for and see if they have any vacancies and would be willing to sponsor.

Although my husband is in another field (IT), no companies would consider him for a job until he got his PR.

Good luck...

Dolly

Default Points

Hi,
thanks all for your reply.
I already tried the points test and got through without any problem.
IELTS - maybe I am not perfect, but I think that I can make it - since 8 yrs I can stay alive in english spoken countries.

Many thanks for the information about the government sponsered visa. As I don't like it cold I will see if it's also possible for Queensland - there should be some great places for me.

Regards
Robert
