Default Moving to Brisbane - Help

Hi,

I am looking to move to Brisane as a Student. I want to study to become a midwife. I am married with 3 children aged 18 and twins of 7 the 18 year old will also be applying for a student visa of her own, I will be applying for my own student visa. My husband will apply for authorisation to work. We left the UK 3 years ago for work in America and now that is finishing we do not want to go back to the UK. Australia was our first choice when we first considered leaving but at that time work took us to the USA. Its been ok but not fun.

We need advice on everything, where to live, where to send the younger chilldren to school, what sort of stuff to bring with us and what stuff to leave behind etc etc anything you can think of

Is there anyone out there that has any advice for us.
Thanks

Hi Onthemove,

Welcome to the forum.

If you check out the sticky posts towards the top of the forum there are

A list of things you need to do before you emigrate - Part 1
A list of things you need to do before you emigrate - Part 2
PLEASE READ: Helpful websites for your move to Australia
Cost of living figures

and they will answer some of your questions.

If you search through the forum there are others moving and living in Brisbane and so your questions may already have been answered elsewhere. I'm in South Australia so I can't help you on the specifics in Brissy.

Regards,
Karen

Hi,

I've found some websites that might help:

Midwifery:
http://www.thinknursing.com/nursing-...ng-out/midwife

Schools:
Australian Schools

For schools and other general info on Brisbane:
Brisbane Schools and Education in Brisbane Queensland Australia

Choosing the right school is extremely important. You'll have to decide if you want your twins to go to a state or private school (Non-Government). Of course, you won't be able to do this until you know which suburb you'll be living in. Once that's decided (and that's a nightmare in itself if you don't know the area at all!), it's down to looking at the schools in the area, checking their websites and any other info you can get off the internet. If you're lucky, there may be a member on here already living in Brisbane who will be able to help you a bit more.

Info on Brisbane's suburbs:
Brisbane - Living in - Brisbane suburbs - ourbrisbane.com

'Brisbane' is a big place, so again, before you can start planning anything you'll really need to have an idea of which suburb you'll be living in.

As for what to take and what to leave behind. That's down to personal choice. Everyone is different. Some like to have a fresh start and ship a minimal amount over and buy new when they arrive (can turn out to be quite expensive though). Others like to have their own stuff and then perhaps buy new when they've settled.

Things prohibited from being imported into Australia:
Moving/Emigrating to Australia - DAFF

Hope some of this helps. It's all very daunting when you first start planning your move over. There is SO much to consider. Just take it a step at a time.

Good luck

Dolly

Thanks for your help it has been fantastic and really helped a lot. I have a couple of questions, firstly I am not sure now whether we are coming to Brisbane or Adelaide, the only thing that is making us change our mind is the price of tuition for the university, but do we really have to pay 10,000 per year for our children to go to school, we do not charge for schooling in the UK and I am now in the USA and I am not paying for my kids to go to school as long as I am here legally i.e. have a visa then they do not charge. My next question is our plans are that I will study Midwifery and then hopefully at the end of the degree be able to gain employment over there as a midwife and stay, it seems that the only way we can get in at the moment is on a student visa. We have been told lots of different things by people that have either done it or tried to do it, does anyone know how long it is before you can apply to be a permanent resident some say 2 years after being in the country others have other ideas. Has anyone done this.

Hi,

I think the best thing you can do is get the advice of a migration agent. Your initial consultation is usually free. You don't have to take it any further than that initial consultation if you don't want to and they'll give you an idea of how you can achieve what you want to do.
