Default Moving to Oz as a student

My family and I are hoping to emigrate on a student visa to Melbourne. Can ayone tell me how much primary school fees are? We have to enroll the kids in school before we can process the visa. How do you know where to send them and can you change your mind once your in Oz?

Do the Oz schools have holiday clubs and after school clubs? If so what are the fees?

Thanks

Hi Monkfish,

Welcome to the forum.

I don't have kids so I can't help you on specifics but there are some links to school websites in the "PLEASE READ..." sticky post towards the top of the forum.

Regards,
Karen

Dear Monkfish,
If you are going to enrol your kids into state schools, you basically need to be living in the catchment area for that particular school.
If your children need looking after , after school , they would need to go to a child care centre after school. That can work out quit pricey as you would not get any Government Subsidy.

Hereith some details regarding school fees on a tempory residents visa.

Schooling Fees for Temporary Residents

As some readers would be aware education for school aged children is administered by the State Governments. Accordingly, there are different rules throughout the country depending on where you are residing.

New South Wales
The New South Wales authority has determined that 457 visa holders (and other temporary residents) are not eligible for subsidised education in Government schools. Provisional Business Skills visa holders and Skilled Independent Regional visa holders are eligible for subsidised education in Government schools.

Schooling fees currently levied in New South Wales on 457 visa holders (and other temporary residents) are Years 11 - 12 Senior High School A$5,500, Years 7 - 10 Junior High School A$4,500 and Years K - 6 Primary School A$4,500.

It is possible to see an exemption of the education fee. An exemption application is assessed by the NSW Department of Education and Training's Temporary Visa Holder's Unit Fee Exemption Panel. An exemption may be granted on proving financial hardship because of the schooling fee levy. We are able to assist in an exemption application on request.

It is evident if you are a 457 visa holder in New South Wales with a number of school aged children the schooling fees for the year may be onerous. If this is the case it may be worth considering applying for permanent residence (if eligible) as soon as possible to reduce education costs.

Australian Capital Territory (Canberra)

457 visa holders and most other temporary visa holders are liable for overseas student charges when attending school in Canberra. Current fees are Years 11 - 12 Senior High School A$13,500, Years 7 - 10 Junior High School A$12,000 and Years K - 6 Primary School A$9,500.00.

The ACT Department of Education and Training expects that a sponsor will meet all education costs.

The cost associated with having school aged dependents on 457 visas attending school in Canberra is very high. Again we would encourage visa holders to consider applying for permanent residence (if eligible).

Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania & North Territory

Temporary Residents and 457 visa holders are eligible for subsidised education when enrolling at Government schools in these states/territory.

I suggest that check our al the facts first.

Out of School care check out the Victorian Governments Website.

Good Luck

Hi Monkfish,

Do you have an idea of a suburb? Public or Independent School?

This website gives details of all schools in Victoria (Independent & Public):
Schools Online: Home Page

Some schools do have strict school zone areas therefore when enrolling you will have to provide a copy of your rental agreement.

The school our boys go to is a public school - fees for the year were around $400 each. If you look at non-government schools then fees can be around $4000 per term (with 3 terms a year), or maybe a once a year fee of say $3000. These are approximates because it really does depend on each individual school.

After a period of time there's no reason why you can't change to another school. The only downside is uprooting your children again.

I live about 45Kms south of Melbourne so if you want any other info let me know

Dolly

Hi Sunnywa,

If the info in your post has been copied from another website please can you just put a link to it rather than copy the info since we don't want issues with copyright - thanks.
