Hi Dolly

Just joined up today after searching the web for things I need to do before moving to Aus and finding your fantastic list. My husband has an interview on Friday after having a succesful telephone interview last week for a job in Brisbane. He is an Architect. We want to be prepared and have a list of all the things you have to consider (and pay for!) so we can work through it should he receive an offer.

I have copied and pasted it into a word document and thank you so much for taking the time to do this.

I grew up in Melbourne and lived there for 9 years but never ventured very far. We came out to Aus (5 of us) in April and spent 3 weeks in Qld then a week in Sydney and a week in Melbourne. The kids loved Sydney and the Sunshine Coast, but Melbourne was too cold! Still we went back to my old haunt on Phillip Island and saw the penguins and I even went back to my old house and school which brough back lots of memories.

Thanks again for the list.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Good luck for your husband for tomorrow's interview.

I know what you mean about the cold in Melbourne. It's a bit nippy at the moment but as it's now Spring we'll be coming into the lovely warm weather again. One of the main reasons we chose Melbourne was because it's not hot all the time so we get some respite from the hot weather. On saying that, when it's cold you sometimes re-think that idea

We visited Phillip Island a few weeks ago and had a lovely time. The penguins were a lot smaller than I'd imagined but so cute.

If you've got any questions etc just ask away.

Dolly

Hi we've just started the emigration process and looking into various areas. Adelaide seems nice - does any one know anything about the Morphet Vale area? In fact, can anyone advise which areas to avoid in Adelaide?

Hello Dolly, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for you list you have compiled. I t will be of great help to us. My family and i are in the early stages of our application to emigrate to Brisbane. We went to Olympia expo yesterday but found it was geared more towards mining and nursing so we were a little dissapointed. We did manage to pick up some contacts that we hope will be of help to us. Do you know anything about the Vetesses process? My husbands trade is Refigeration & Air-conditioning and he has his exam in Feb. He is obviously nervous about it even though he has 15yrs experience. I think it dosent help not knowing what to expect. Mel

Thanks Mel!

Welcome to the forum.

If you do a search on the forum there's lots of threads on VETESSES.

When we went to the Earls' Court expo a few years ago it was exactly the same, if your field of work wasn't mining and nursing it really was a waste of time.

Good luck and ask away if you have any more questions.

Dolly

Dolly,

I am trying to be as well prepared as possible for our move and as I am currently on maternity leave have the time to do so. Is it possible to do many of the things on your list before receiving the visa. We are 100% confident of getting the visa (husband is a maths teacher, we have full points, medicals passed and no criminal record so unless I'm missing something it's just a waiting game). I am thinking of things like opening bank accounts, PO boxes etc plus anything else that can be done beforehand.

Thanks

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Yes, you can open bank accounts before you get here, all you will need to do is activate the account when you arrive. This is what we did, we used Westpac.

Re Post boxes, I think you will need an australian address to put on the application form, so if you know someone (friend/family) who's address you can use you'll be able to sort one out before you leave. But bear in mind, Post Office box availability can be rarer than hen's teeth!

I guess it all depends on when you think you'll be moving over as to what you can start now. You can do lots of research on accommodation/get quotes in for shippers/areas to live/day care for child(ren), schools (if you got children school age)/jobs/flights - the list is endless!! - most of the list can be done nearer the time you will be leaving.

Good luck!
Dolly
