Default Breakdown of Costs

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had done, or knows of a link to, a breakdown of what it would cost the average brit to relocate to Australia, inclusive of all fee's (fees involved with selling up in the UK, visa fee's, hotels, flights, haulage, rent/bonds upon arrival in Oz, etc.)

I would be interested to see if my calculations are miles off! I have estimated that for my partner and 2 kids (3&5) to move out, we would need a minimum of £20k to get over and get settled, probably nearer £25k.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Simon

I think that the issue is that this is so varied depending on your situation.

Selling up in the UK - are you talking about selling you house? The agents fees will come out of the house sale.

Visa fees depends in the type of visa you are going for:
Follow the links through here
Migrants Visa Charges

There can also be agents fees if a migration agent is doing the visa for you which seems to vary between 2000 - 5000 GBP.

Hotels - is this for the UK before you move or after in Australia?
This will depend on where you are moving to and how long you are staying for. We didn't stay in hotels in the UK since we were with family once the house had sold. We had a stopover in Malaysia on the way out here for a few days and then we only stayed in hotels 2 nights since we had already bought a house here.

Flights - it depends on airlines, stopovers etc.

Haulage - depends on how much you are taking, and where you are moving from and to. We weren't taking much but we did take a 1971 Mustang, so moving from Hertfordshire in the UK to Mount Gambier was about 6000 GBP for a 40 ft container.

Rent / bonds again will depend on area, type of property.

Thanks for the reply Karen.

Yes, we will be selling up in the UK and using the proceeds to fund our new life!

We will only be looking into hotels when we arrive, prior to sorting out a rented property (which will undoubtedly pose problems of its own with no Aussie credit history!)

We will be shipping basic household furniture and probably a car (Family Saloon)
My other half is a travel agent so flights etc we should get nice and cheap!

What I was after was a Joe Average budget, outlined for information.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

Are you sure you want to bring a car? Be aware that bringing a car in has added costs other than the transport. Depending on the car there may be luxury car tax, import duty, fees for cleaning the car (possible replacement tyres), fees for registration and inspection fees.

Most people don't tend to bring a car with them and cars here aren't too expensive in comparison to the UK.

Regards,
Karen

I guess we don't have to bring the car, it was more for ease of getting around when we arrive. If transport links are good enough I wouldn't need it, I'm used to the rubbish trainline between Essex and London, and presumably the Australian system CANNOT be as bad as that, so maybe we wouldn't miss it as much as we would here....

Hi Simon,

Again public transport really depends on where you move to. I think that transport is good in all the major cities however the further out you go the more unreliable it gets. We're in South Australia, half way between Melbourne and Adelaide and we don't have a train service at all. Apparently it was shut down some years ago due to lack of customers. So to get to Melbourne it's A$115 each way by plane (we do have an airport), coach and train ( 6 -7 hours) or drive (about 4 hours). People out here seem to accept that they will drive most of the time and think nothing of driving to Adelaide or Melbourne.

Oh and the price on the car is not the 'on the road' price unless stated. You have to add on delivery charge, GST and stamp duty. So you can negotiate to a certain extent and that will reduce your stamp duty too. And that's on new as well as used cars.

Regards,
Karen
