Hi Jason,

Welcome to the forum.

From a purely ethical point of view I would say yes you do need to pay off your debt. I'm actually not sure what will happen if you don't but depending on where you owe money they may either go after family members, court proceeding etc.

If you are coming to Australia come and make a new start with a clean slate.

Regards,
Karen

Credit checks are not part of the visa process, and your credit history is not carried forward here.

Depending on the visa type it can take up to two years for the visa application process. It took us 2 years but our skills weren't in demand.

Karen

Hi Jason,

We had came here (South Australia ) in July 2007 via skilled independent visa but were not on the in demand list. We applied in 2003 I think (we had to be under 40 to have all the points). Once we got approval we still had things to sort out which is why we didn't come over earlier.

Initially we thought I would be the main applicant (I was in IT but no degree) but we were turned down by 2 agents. The 3rd agent suggested that my husband be the main applicant (gardening) since he was in a trade and didn't need a degree. This is why I suggest going to more than one agent for free advice

Regards,
Karen

There is another thread about moving pets so try to find that and that may give you some more info.

I didn't have a pet so can't comment on the cost.

Karen

Hi,
as far as leaving debts go, they cant go after family memebers in the UK. It is against the law. If you are worried, then you should pay them off, but as long as they are only civil debts. ie. crdit cards, loans etc. They cant really do anything when you are in Australia. I hope this helps.

Liz

Hi there,

The agents fees you were quoted were about right, but the dog shipping fee seems a bit on the high side. I think we paid about £2.5K to ship milly over, plus $787 for quarantine fees when we collected her from the quarantine station.

We used AirPets and they were absolutely fantastic...did everything for us which was brilliant as we'd got such a lot to sort out in a very short time - the last thing we wanted was to get Milly's bit wrong!
