Hi Richie

I have been reading your posts and i am so pleased you have found somewhere nice to rent. It is a major worry for expats isn't it, we are lucky as my cousin is in Brisbane and we have therefore secured a really nice place at $400 wk.

Best of luck with everything else and keep the positives coming my way!!!! Enjoy your ozzie dream....ellisax

Great to hear you've found a rental Richie,

Now everything else will fall into place for you.

Australia is very much a multi-cultural society so mixed relationships and generally accepted without question (I say generally because in any society you get some people who are not as open minded as the rest of us). We've been here 2 years now and I've never come across any racism.

Keep us posted on how you're getting on - and I'm presuming my house warming invite is in the post .

Dolly

The people are very nice, we were worried about how they would be but everyone is so helpful and polite, the mix of cultures is great. there was bad press about australia before we came over but we have seen noting of the sort. we are a mixed couple and nobody blinks an eye at us here but in Ireland and south Africa we would get the stares and glances. we are starting to feel a bit more positive about the place.[/QUOTE]

Hiya Richie,

We're also a mixed couple, me Indian, OH White and this was one of the things that I am still worried about as I know from 1st hand experience how hard it can be to settle somewhere where people can be ignorant. But am glad that you haven't come across this. I'm so glad it's all working out well for you. Now the job hunt can seriously begin...... best of luck with that.

xx Satty

I think that Australia is multi-cultural in the bigger cities but less so in regional areas (and the UK was like that when we left 2.5 years ago). Where we are is getting more multi-cultural - which is wonderful. (Still wishing for a Greek restaurant to open up ).

Regards,
Karen

The mobile phone system is bad, very dated. the city is nice but some of the surrounding areas are dirty and rundown. It has a very bad graffiti problem , what is wrong with these kids!!?? it really makes the place look bad. sorry if i paint a negative view but this has been my first 3 days. i havent seen everything yet. going to view fully furnished apartment tomorrow and it looks really nice but its 40 mins outside the city. i think you have to travel to get decent accomadation. close to the city is expensive and old. is sydney like this or is it better?
