Working week

Hi,

As a mother of 3, I would like to work 3, max. 4 days a week.
We are going to Brisbane.

Someone told me a normal working week for public sector jobs is 4days, nor 5.
I had never heard that before.

Can anyone confirm this?

Hi Busyte:

You need to get a copy of the award contract or EBA (Enterprise Bargaining Contract) for that agency/sector to find out what is considered full-time. For example it could be 7.25 hrs/day is considered full time and if you want another schedule that adds up to that (i.e. 12.5 hrs/day x 3 days) then you need to work it out on an individual basis with written mgmt approval. Many people work out 4 day weeks by working the same amount of hours in 4 days instead of 5 and build up something called 'flex leave'.

If you go part-time just note you also get part-time everything else (amount of annual leave, superannuation contribution, accrued sick leave).

Get that agreement ASAP as this should be covered in there.

My wife works for the Government, and full time is considered 5 days.

However, by starting early, finishing late and taking a short lunch, she can accrue enough flex to just about have a day off every week if she wished.

So yes, it is possible to do 4 days, but that is not the normal working week.
