Smile Taking the dogs with us???

One of the many things to consider before moving out to Oz, is the process of getting our two little dogs out with us. Have looked at the cost and got a rough idea but does anyone know how long they would be in quarantine? Cant find info on that. They would be based at the centre in Melbourne. Cheers anyone who can help.

I moved the thread to the Australia forum, where it is more appropriate.

Hi,

Ive been looking into this myself for my little dog, you can find some good info here www.aqis.gov.au

If the pet comes from the UK (and a few other countries) they have to be quarantined for 30 days, providing they meet all the requirements. SO, not that bad!!!

Hope this helps?

Debbie

Thanks Debbie. Have found out info about where they are kept in Melbourne ( our vet even worked there for a while!) who can transport them etc, but nothing about length of quarantine! So thanks for this, it is another thing to get organised and get the timing right.

Default Timing

Yeah the timing is what counts! I read the whole thing from the government website posted above a couple of weeks ago and as far as I understand it's that your pet needs at least 180 days after the rabies CONTROL. If you do 150 of those in your own country he/she only needs 30 days in quarantine in OZ, if you leave on day 148 it's 32 days and so on. Wish we could do 170 days and 10 in OZ or something .

Greetings,
Loes

Hi Loes,
As Uk is rabies free would that quarantine still be needed in the UK? Or would that quarantine refer to blood tests with your own vet to check they are fit?
Thanks though for the breakdown in time, that is a great help and just what we needed.
Von

Default Sorry

Sorry to dissapoint you but the UK is classified as a rabies free country, but they still have to do 30 days quarantine (trust me you're getting off easy compared to me, from the netherlands!). The only rabies free countries not needing quarantine are new zealand and two more which i can't remember at this point. I STRONGLY suggest the aqis link found 2 or 3 posts above this one. There you can select "bringing dogs&cats to australia", then select your country, and you will get the right information packet. In this packet is a VERY thorough explanation of the rules and requirements that will tell you everything you want to know and then some. It also comes with handy to follow steps and a checklist at the end to make sure you've done everything....
You should really study it as there are many other conditions like: pet must have lived 6 months in UK for UK rules to apply, can't be younger than 12 weeks, cant be pregnant, must have chip, yadda yadda.
It is also where i got that earlier calculation from about days in quarantine so it should really help, and it will explain everything. Getting your pet there is about as much work as getting a VISA for yourself!

Hope it helps,
Loes
