Ielts English Test - Do You Have To Take It???

Hi can anyone help,

I maybe missing something, but, do you have to take the IELTS english test with 100 points. We are a little confused...hubby works as a Construction Estimator with a HNC and 10yrs plus experince, but, we have only scored 100 points, and I started reading about the test, sounds a bit confusing....can anyone shed any light on it???

Hi Debbie,

If you check out this page
Skilled – Independent (Migrant) visa (subclass 175)

it states that there are exemptions....
Exemptions: Applicants who hold a passport from one of the countries listed below will not be required to sit the IELTS test to demonstrate that they meet the English language threshold:

* United Kingdom (UK)
* Canada
* New Zealand
* United States of America (USA)
* Republic of Ireland.

So I think that applies to all visas (although that webpage is from the skilled independent visa which we took, and we didn't have to sit IELTS tests since we were from the UK and Ireland).

Hi Debbie,

I think you automatically get 25 points with the exemption.
And don't forget to add yourself as a partner with skills for 5 points.

I just tried to test out of curiosity and we wouldn't get in now because we are too old - we had to apply to before we hit 40, and I think the points pass mark has gone up in the last few years too.

Thanks for that I will check out that website, hubby has just turned 40 Im 33 next month, Im sure you are right, as I haven't come across before now about that test. Were just having a bit of panic at the moment thinking we can't get in on 100 points!!!

Hi Debbie as far as i know you can take the English test to get extra points maybe contact a agent they give free consultations and will work out your points as well

The exemptions mean you already get the points without having to take the test :-)

Yep

but ive heard of other people taking it to get the 25 points to bring them up to the right level i might be wrong but you don't get the full 25 points if your living in a English speaking country I think its about 10 i could be wrong on that trying to remember now i was reading that on another expact site i was confused at the time if we had to take it was glad we didnt as it was long enough waiting for the tra to come back

We moved from the UK, we didn't take the IELTS test because of the exemption and we got the full 25 points. We wouldn't have been able to get in without it!
Maybe you take it if you're in an English speaking country that does not fall under the exemption....

May be thats why they were doing it i wasn't sure if you got the full 25 points good to know
