Hi there,

Welcome to the forum.

You could sponsor your son, but his job would have to be on the skills in demand list.

Or whilst he's out here he could see if a company would sponsor him.

Have a look at the sticky at the top of the forum page "please read: helpful websites.....", there's a link to DIAC with all the visas available and their requirements/obligations.

Any questions, just ask away.

Dolly

an australian pr holder cannot sponser until five years after the sponsorship was granted.

i am assuming you are going for citizenship at some stage.

special circumstances do arise but basically you would have to prove you can independantly support your son, asurance of support may be required but this is at the discretion of immigration.

from the consul general in Hong Kong, where i am based, a pr holder must wait five years before they can sponser anyone if they were sponsered themselves.

also depends on the nationality of your son.

as i don't know your circumstances ignore the above if it doesn't apply to you.

google immigration australia, not enough posts to give you the linky....

it is a complicated process....to say the least, speaking from experience with my husband's visa, many hoops and red tape....

If the parents come out on PR visa then they may not have been sponsored themselves so does that mean that they can sponsor their son?

I've not heard anyone else mention this 5 year rule before (but I'm not an expert ).

I was under the impression once you have PR you can sponsor someone....it doesn't matter which visa you came over on....PR is PR.

I'd be interested to know where you got the information from on the 5 year rule.....if it is correct then I've learned something new....and you always learn something new on here.

Department of Immigration & Citizenship

if you were sopnsered yourself, that is the time frame, this is from the consul general in HK, also if you are an australian citizen and have sponsered someone before, you must wait five years before you can sponser anyone else.

now they do very strict background checks on people, there is a question about 'do you have a criminal record?'...friend who has been an expat for years found out he had a court order dating back to 1998 over parking fines when they checked his records in oz....not a criminal record but still....they are very thorough....

That link goes to the front page of the DIAC website, do you have the link to the page where it states the 5 year limit? Sorry to be a pest.

Dolly that info is from the consul general, i hang out with the embassy crowd here....if you go that website search for 'visa' there are forms in pdf you can download....with the accompanying info.

sorry internet today is timing out on the website....here is info from an information package i saved.

'you may not be able to sponsor if you

are not an australian citizen, australian permanent resident or elgible new zealand citizen; or

have previously sposored 2 other persons for immigration to australia ( includes sponsorship you may have withdrawn or;

have sposored within the last five years or

are a the holder of a 'woman at risk visa ( subclass 204)

The purpose of the sponsorship limitations is to prevent abuse of migration provisions and this will be considered by a department decision maker when considering whether or not to excercise the waiver.'

I would get in touch directly with someone to clarify this for you, sorry am not an expert unfortunately....

OK, thanks for that. I'll see if I can find out more. I have searched the DIAC website but it's not the most friendliest of sites for searching anything

Cheers

agree Dolly, not user friendly and confusing to navigate through it....

on another note, i would contact someone directly about this, that site has 'contact us' option and some phone numbers....

internet info is general to say the least and not specific to your case....i can only offer what i know from abroad but you are in oz....

wishing you all the best of luck with this....
