Default Nursing Help !!

Hi all,

i hope someone could help me. i am a student nurse due to quailfy in 8 weeks. i know i have to be qualified to applyfor a visa, but when job searchiing in Australia, a minimum of a years post -reg experience is required for nurses. the given timescale for visa applications i believe is around 15 - 18 months.

Does anyone know if it is worh applying as soon as i qualify, as by the time the visa comes through i would have my experience ?

Also, having never been to Australia i am really undecided on where to live. i have been looking into many different places, but really am unsure.

i have 2 children who are 10 years old, so obviously their interests come first. also would like the weather

i'd be really grateful for any help

I've never been to Australia, either, but I know for job hunting in general it's usually much better to have a couple of years of experience under your belt before looking to emmigrate. It also helps in looking for an overseas job, if you can at least claim some familiarity with the place you are going.

Any chance you could work for a year or two, and during that time make an exploratory trip to Australia - to scope out places, and to make inquiries about your job chances there? The extra experience could make a huge difference - and if you let people you work with know about your interest in Australia, you may just find someone who can help you by referring you to someone they know or putting in a good word for you with a friend or colleague down under.
Cheers,
Bev

thanks for help bev,

i did originally think of this option, as we are getting married at the beggining of 2009 we thought of going to australia for our honeymoon. then emmigrate in 2-3 years, the only downside i felt was my children would be 13 then and i would worry they would not want to emmigrate. which means we would not consider it then.

thanks tho

luc

Hi Lao,

When we went through the visa process (skilled independent) the Australian authorities gave a 'deem' date which is the date that they though I had become a professional. They did this during the visa and not at the end.

Now it may be different with you since your skills are probably in demand but I still think that you may need some experience (as Bev was saying) before you attempt a move.

It may be worth either talking to an emigration agent or going to one of the expos (if you are in the UK) so that you can get some more info.

Regards,
Karen

Hi lao, I am also a nurse in the community. I have found it so difficult looking a jobs in Oz as they seem to be graded differently. I am a band 7 over here but don't know what the bands and grading is like in Oz. We have booked tickets for the expo in Edinburgh in Feb as I feel this is the only way we can move forward. Hopefully they will have all the advice I need. So maybe it would be worth doing that.

Perth and some private hospitals in Brisbane take on newly qualified nurses and you will be put on a programme for the first year. Do some more research and see what comes up, best of luck!
