Default Thinking about moving...

I've just been offered a job with a company in Sydney and I seriously cannot decide what to do... So, I need help...

I have a list of questions to ask the company but want to make sure I have covered all areas before I have a telephone conference with them next Tuesday...

If anyone can give me some advise on what to ask around living in Sydney I would love the help... I have so many questions already but really want to ensure I make the right decision...

BTW i'm currently living in the UK so this is a massive move, I have been to Australia before though on a 6month break...

Help me please someone...

Hi Pinky

Welcome to Expat Forum - you've come to the right place for help!

We moved to Australlia from the UK 14 months ago on the back of a job offer for my husband. Glad we did it but it is definitely very stressful.

Will you be in the city or the outer suburbs? Are they going to help you find somewhere to live? What Visa will you be coming out on? Will you be on your own or with family? If you're on a temporary visa what costs will they pay for you.....health care etc?

If you could tell me a bit more about your situation I should be able to help you out. I'm an hour away from Sydney so am more than happy to help you out with anything you need doing at this end too

Hi Rach,

Thank you for replying so quickly, i've never used a forum but I thought this would be the best thing as like yourself you have been through this already...

I've been offered sponsorship as the company I work for now is linked to this company, which good for me...

The office is within the city and i'll be on my own.. (

The good thing is I know loads of people in this ofice already as I have worked with them when they have visited our UK office...

Not sure on details regarding finding somewhere to live etc, but I have that as one of my questions to ask... As I don't want to have to worry about finding a place for at least the first two months if I can help it...

I work in IT and my current job is managing our live systems but this new job is moving into system design so not only is it a change in directions for my career it's also on the otherside of the world... Can you see why i'm nervous ha ha..

So do you love it in Australia, I read your previous threads regarding leaving family and that's one of my fears...

Seriously, dont take any notice of that post - I was on a very bad day because my mum had just left - its passed now and its fine - honestly.

Obviously you need to be aware that the cost of living in the CBD (housing etc) is shockingly expensive. Make sure that you're either given an allowance for that or that your salary is enough to still give you a good standard of living. We live an hour outside Sydney and we barely scrape through here (husbands salary isnt great!!).

So would it be a temporary sponsored visa? If so then thats the same one we came out on - a 457 Visa. It was fine for us but something you'd need to look at changing as quickly as possible if you decided you wanted to stay here permanently - basically you still pay the same tax etc as everyone else, but you dont get the perks, like full Medicare etc etc.

Its great that you'll already know a lot of people - that makes a HUGE difference. We were in the same situation too which helped us so much.

Umm..........yes I can see why you're nervous!!!! Been there done that - not a nice feeling at all but if you dont do it you'll be hounded by 'what ifs' for the rest of your life - now thats not a nice feeling either!!

Awww love it, sounds like your on the same wave length as me.. I keep thinking what if...

I didn't know there was different types of sponsorships, but now I do I can ask on Tuesday what it would be, see your helping me already... thank you...

On my email it said that he would give me sponsorship and the job is a two year minimum...

I loved Australia last time I was there so I do really want to come back, it's just so scary leaving everyone behind, luckily I have no ties so no one else is really impacted by my move, but I know my mum is going to freak out...

Ok i'm off to bed now as it has been a long week, if you can think of anything else please do let me know as I need all the help I can get....

Hope you have a good day...

Yes you definitely need to find out more about the Visa type. It could be that its the same one we came out on - which like I say is great, BUT.....if you lose your job with them (for whatever reason) then you have 28 days to leave the country and you cant work for any other company while you're on their 457 Visa. You can however go out on a temp 457 Visa and then get them to sponsor you for a permanent visa when you arrive - which is what we did. You might be lucky though and they may go for the permanent one straight away - fingers crossed.

Try not to worry about your mums response - at the end of the day she'll just want you to be happy. Not sure if you are thinking of making it a permanent move or not I found it helped my mum (and me actually) to say that we were just going for 2 years. By that time your mum will have warmed to the idea and will hopefully have been out to visit you etc etc.

Sleep well

Rach xxxx

Hi...

So I asked all of my questions and then I remembered that I had forgotten to ask which type of VISA!!! Ahhhh... ha ha... But I am having coffee over the next two days with a couple of guys from the Sydney office that are currently working in our UK office and one of them did the whole relocation with this company so hopefully he will be able to tell me...

Every question that I have asked has come back with a good response so I think I may be packing up and going, as along as the next two days are positive...

The more I think about going the better I feel about it, there is so much to sort out now though...

xx

At least you are asking questions. I was asked if I would be interested in the assignment, and I accepted right away. It was easier for me because temporary housing was all 'sorted out' for me along with everything else. Knowing lots of people will make a big difference. I knew a few, and that helped. People are pretty friendly, anyway.

Hi Pinky

How is the move going? Are you in Sydney yet? I'm also considering a big move to Sydney through my employer and feeling quite nervous about leaving all my friends behind

Hi, how are you? Hope what i'm about to tell you eases some tension from your mind. I am not sure of your marital status or children or age, however, i went to Sydney for a 2 wek holiday and ended up staying there for 5 years. Ok, im single with no children and was 26 or so at the time, but i found plenty of work which was better paying than NewZealand, met alot of great new friends from all over the globe and found a girlfriend. I joined sports clubs and found myself loving every part of Sydney. When i broke up with my GF, i travelled around the rest of oz working along the way depending on my financial situation. I would go back and do all of this again. My point to you, is that you will meet alot of people from NZ, OZ and Uk, so you wont feel you are alone. You already have work lined up. You will have great summers and a great new change. Try and live in the Bondi, coogee or even Manly areas. Alot of Uk people would kill to be in your shoes with the way visa's are these days. Hope this Helps you. Good luck
