I realise that Sydney is more expensive than other areas and hence the question. Also having scouted the web to try and get some indication of housing prices has been difficult to say the least. Any ideas on what would be the rental on a 3 bedroom house? I would have no problem commuting as nothing could be worse that the 1.5hr commute I have here in London.

Hey, I've lived in Perth (Western Australia) most of my life, this is how much I'd expect to pay for the following (of reasonably decent quality):

Mens pants AU$70-150
Mens shirts AU$40-150
mens shoes AU$100-200

Sorry, can't help much with the womens or kids clothing or daycare fees

Of course the costs of everything is relative to where you have come from. I think people moving from Asia will generally find it expensive in Australia, and people from Europe will generally find it reasonable - in comparison. A useful resource to compare cost of living for expats is a website calculator called xpatulator. You can find it via google. Hope this helps.

We've moved to Perth from Scotland and I'd say some things here such as rent is relatively expensive compared to what I paid for a year renting in the prime area in Edinburgh.

South Australia is one of the cheaper states in Oz! So for Sydney, add another 1/4 probably.

I'm going to live in Orange, NSW. The company is going to pay for the rent so that's good for me. Looking at prices of stuff... yeah, they seem to be expensive for me and yes, I'm from Asia.

Here is an update of the prices since those original prices were back in January 08 and I've noticed some increases in prices over the last month or so.
The updated prices are in red where they have gone up and green where they have gone down or are the same.
There may be a difference due to the seasons as well since we are in a regional area.

A stranger stopped in the Coles car park and told me that they drive once a month to Hamilton (about a 2 hour drive) to the Aldi supermarket there. The amount that they save pays for the petrol.
