holy duck!!!

its western!!! hahahaaa, I was thinking about writing western suburbs cheaper than eastern but ended up mentioning only the eastern. I was eating and typing. My attention might got diverted to the "pickle" my wife was serving me........lol.

Anyways, ours is a very small unit. One living room with open kitchen and a bedroom with attached bathroom. All in all its less than 300 sq ft. (thats around 1/5th of our apt in India). My friend(school buddy) recently moved to this area(just a stones throw away from us) pays $290 per week for 2 bedroom unit. His unit is very nice while ours is pretty basic. But we wanted rental history and close proximity to trains and buses. With-in 250m from our place, there are four different bus-lines and train station. Next year we intend to shift to localities something like Royal Park or Pascoe Vale or Ascot Vale. We loved those places. The rents there are around $250 per week for 1bedroom units.

When we were moving from India to Oz, we decided we would limit our monthly spending to 2.5k for the first year. Now whatever extra we save in this 2.5k goes towards investments apart from our savings(which is income minus expense).

NOTE: Anjali, can you edit my previous post and append a note mentioning that Seddon is in Western sub-urbs.

Anj, if they increase the rent threaten to move out and they may change their minds. Seriously. You can find nice 2 bed apartments in Camberwell and surrounding suburbs in a similar range.

Real Estate & Property For Rent with 2+ bedrooms in VIC 3124 (Page 1) - realestate.com.au

this one's nice for $ 350 - fantastic location.

Also Kew

Think about it

We lived in a large 2 bed apartment in Kew when we first arrived and before hubby joined us. We paid $360 p/w.

Thanks for the search results bby2oz, my daughter is settled in the childcare, i dont want to change that now, will continue living here, if not this house then in box hill, we can adjust but taking her out now and putting at another place will be torturing her.. yeah i have asked my agent to figure ways to keep as minimum a hike as possible.
we will look into buying soon, not right away but it in on the cards in near future, that is when i want to change the childcare, till then i would rather stay in box hill north/box hill and make life easier for all of us

Default Cost of Living ...

Karen....
The cost of living primeraily depends upon what level of life you need....depending upon what you are ...Student, individual, professional, etc etc.
I have seen people living in New York with $10 also and $10000 also.
Rgds,
Raj

I have lived in NY for a few months and would disagree with your $10 claim....
$10 will barely get you a full meal these days...

yes, agree. In case no one has been reading properly (and suggest you start at the beginning of this post in 2010), Australia is more expensive than NY and one of the most expensive countries in the world at the moment. It is NOT offset by the jobs (which, thanks to the immigration issues we now face are no longer available) or 'lifestyle'. It is EXPENSIVE and jobs are not PLENTIFUL. It is not based anymore on where you choose to live (electricity has gone up 10% this year-not location dependant for example) and we do not have the luxury of the social benefits that they have in the UK-you pay for everything. Including dental (unless you have an expensive private medical plan). I am not sure why you all believe it is a 'better life' as it used to be when times were better a few years ago...but now it is Expensive. We spend half the year in the US and Europe and half here. It is the most expensive part (almost double) of our annual living expenses. All I am saying is do your research-it is NOT $10 per day or "how you choose to live":-I am not sure wehre Trajan12 was living or getting his research from -its impossible in Australia to believe anyone can live on this amount. Get realistic and do your research.

Guys...
I just gave a figure to show the range of expenses for different levels.
If not $10 -- it could be $25! Of course US govt pays close to $500/month to un-employed peopled which translates to about $17/day....and that figure is based on various recommandations from national economic and social welfare committees.
