Hi Roger,
Try Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au and take a look at rentals there - since the biggest outlay is usually rent / mortgage.
I'm not in the areas that you are looking for....

Cheers,
Karen

this may also be helpful:
http://www.domain.com.au/
for indicative prices. Also be aware that many areas (mainly near beach or close to the city) are currently experiencing 100-200 people arriving to open house and filling in applications. The prices quoted on the site are not necessarily the rents being charged which can be much higher. These are indicative to induce interested parties and they usually go with the highest offer.

the car prices seem to be a rip-off compared to USA...I had a new corolla 2010 model for $15K but this is not even close to what its gonna cost me in Aus ...
Which brands/models can be bought in the AUS$5000 range?
gumtree.com.au will be your best bet or if you dont feel like trekking around adelaide then there will be second hand dealers in the city.

do not forget to consider the tax rates here which are very high (approx 48%) on your income. There is also a medicare levy of 1.5% depending on your income as well as a number of new proposed taxes coming in this year. Here is an indicative for this past year:

Individual income tax rates

We are two people - me and my wife. Our monthly expenses are coming out to be around $700 for food and public transport. Bought a car 10 days back. So there will be a change in transport costs.

We just moved into a unit, so we dont have the exact figure for the utility bills yet. Rent is around $200 per week(i.e. $867 p.m) for single bedroom unit in seddon(western sub-urbs ). Anyways, 1st month electricity bill was $59. We dont have gas connection so no gas bill. We dont have the heaters yet, but will get them over in the weekend so I expect an increase in the electricity bill.

Took a Telstra landline connection just for the internet. Thats $23 p.m. ($59 for new connection charges) and clubtelco internet connection $40 p.m.($50 for connection charges per year + $60 for the modem).

All in all our monthly expenses are well under 2k on a calculated spending. Once our spending normalises we expect our expenses would increase to little over 2k. I have not included the cost of entertainment yet!!

PS: I feel guilty for not sharing all the details and for not contributing to this wonderful forum while taking all the benefit for preparation to come to Oz. This June 10th we will finish 4 months stay in Oz. Hope I will be able to put a thread on our experiences by them .
