Hi Worldwide worker,

If you check out the "Please read..." post towards the top of the forum that has real estate websites on it - both sales and rental and that should give you some idea of the rental for a 3 bed house.

I don't live in Sydney so I can't help with the rest of the questions.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Kaz

Thanks for that. We have been through a magnitude of real estate sites and have a pretty good idea of rental costs. As always it is not easy as one is not familiar with the region and the photos don't give you all the info.

Accommodation we have pretty much sorted and I am happy with my budget on that score.

rents in sydney have gone up lately.more people but not more houses.
3 br rent depends critically where in sydney
if you go out west say 20 km and catch train (medium to good service 50 mins in air conditioned train around $10 each way cheaper if buy 1-3 months ticket)
then rents are $200-250/week. closer in rents are $350-600/week depending on the area.
difficult to drive if then on top of driving time ( 45mins-1hour using part expressways and $4 toll each way ) you have to pay parking fee in CBD around $20-40 per day.

education is expensive if not government funded school or church school (usually catholic and often expect you to confirm your kids into that religion but excellent standard and discipline compared to govt schools and for little cost)
non govt /non-religious schools are around $20,000 per year for each student plus extras so often on a par with price of small house after 6 years of study for 2 kids!! bit of a ripoff in my opinon(I chose the expensive alternative and felt let down by the school). many opt for cheaper schools or move nearby a selective government school to be allowed in ) but pay for special tuition around $40 /hour per subject tutored.

Anybody got cost of living figures for WA (not Perth). We are moving to a town in WA, not been told where yet, and wanting to know what costs are likely to be. Only my huband will be working $50000 per annum, we've been told that we will also receive subsidies as we are in the 'out back' - about $10000 per annum. We will also have subsided rent, so will only pay between $35-$70 a week.

Thanks

Kareena

Offhand I can't remember any current members in WA but that doesn't mean that there aren't any. I suggest doing a search through the forum to see if you can find a member talking about WA just in case they miss your post.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Squeaky,

The costs that I have entered are for South Australia although not for Adelaide.
Dolly's costs are near Melbourne although not in Melbourne. If you are looking for rentals check out the property links in the "Please read...." post.

It depends on what visa you have, what you do for a living, what weather you like etc. on whether you chose Adelaide or Melbourne. Melbourne is a big multicultural city and is known for having all 4 seasons in a day. Adelaide is smaller, more laid back, a little hotter and property is cheaper. If you are in IT Melbourne will be better for you than Adelaide.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Karen,
thanks for the pointers. I like the sound of Adelaide and SA more than Victoria. We've checked out house prices etc and this is the favoured place at present. I'm currently looking for a work sponsor and have a few lined up. We're visiting both states in December with a view to moving this time next year

We spent a month travelling around Victoria, and then came back the following year and spent a month travelling around SA and we prefered SA. We considered Adelaide but my husband didn't want to live in a city, and we still wanted to get more for our money where houses were concerned so that's why we're in SE SA.
However in SA nearly everything is based around Adelaide so if you move too far out you may miss out on things.

Regards,
Karen
