This supermarket is Coles (one of the popular ones) and in South East South Australia (not sure if prices will be different across states). We've found that we can only get some foods when they are in season but that may be because we are not in a major city.

Broccoli $6.98 / kg
Cauliflower $3.68 each
Avocado $1.79 each
Bread rolls $1.29 (6 pack)
Milk $2.59 (2 litres)
Bacon $4.29 (250gm)
Kanga banga $3.04 (per kg) Yes Kangaroo sausages!
Potatoes (Baby) $3.48 for 2kg
Diced Beef $10.46 (per kg)
Mixed Juice (3 litres) $4.19
Tea bags (100) $2.39
Ham sliced (100gm) $2.59
Pizza (500gm family size) $5.56
Toilet cleaner (500 ml) $2.79
Iceberg lettuce $1.22 each
Bananas $2.98 per kg
Butter (500g) $2.37
Choc ices (10) $4.69
Nutrigrain cereal (805gm) $5.99
Palmolive washing up liquid (375 ml ) $2.49
Ice cream (2 litre) $4.98
Sausage (Lamb & leek) (500gms) $4.99
Lamb leg roast $9.16 per kg
Toilet tissue (9 pack) $4.99
Brussel sprouts $8.98 per kg
Cordial (2 litre) $4.27
Strawberry jam (500 gm) $3.14
Cadbury chocolate (250gm) $3.49
Chicken (whole) $7.98 per kg
Greencare laundry washing liquid (2 litre) $4.50
Hellmans mayonnaise (400 gm) $5.34 (about twice the price of other brands)
Sanitarium weet-bix (1 kg) $5.27
Condensed milk (395 gms) $2.29
Sugar (1 kg) $1.32

I ought to point out that this is from various shopping lists

Some of the prices are a bit steep ie cauliflower, brocolli. The rest are comparable to the UK. Well it will be definitely be growing my veggies in the green house/shed job when I get to Australia.

It is definitely helpful that cost comparison.

Thanks

Lela

Some of those prices are a bit steep compared to where I am in Queensland !!
eg:
Milk $2.59 (2 litres) - Our local shop $1.99 today
Avocado $1.79 each - Woolworths catalogue today 94c each

It always pays to shop around, and realise that the supermarkets are normally much more expensive than the local fruit stores for fruit and veg.

On the way back from school I just picked up:
$1.40 1 sliced white loaf
$1.99 12 Eggs
$1.99 2 litres milk

Stupid question but dont they have something like the UK over here, Tesco, Sainsbury and the lot. Local shops tend to be a bit on the steep over here.

Yes there are Coles (where that list comes from), Safeways (also known as Woolworths - nothing like the old UK company), IGA and others.

Small corner shops here can be more expensive than the supermarkets (like the UK) but some of them can specialise (like She's Apples) and so you can get more variety.

Regards,
Karen

In my area we have Coles, Woolworths, BILO, ALDI's and Foodworks as the supermarkets, plus the local shops.

Fresh Food in the Supermarkets in mine tends to be much more expensive than the smaller shops, although ALDI is closer to the smaller shops in price for vegetables.

Meat at the local butcher is much cheaper.

eg: Rump steak I would pay $4.99 kg for budget, or $9.99 kg for MSA grade, but Woolworths would be charging $12 and $18.

My fruit shop has onions for 49c kg, but Woolworths is asking $1.99 or $2.49, (I can't remember exactly but it was one or the other).

Prices can vary so much more here for fresh fruit, due to daily availability, eg Bananas. I have seen them in my fruit shop between 99c and $1.99 kg on different days this week. In Woolworths they trend to be about $2.99 kg.

Here is something I did a short while ago:

Quote:
Australian Bureau of Statistics Shopping basket

The ABS recently published some figures, to compare prices between the main Australian Cities

The 'shopping basket' of Fresh fruit and vegetables was:

* Oranges (1kg)
* Bananas (1kg)
* Potatoes (1kg)
* Tomatoes (1kg)
* Carrots (1kg)
* Onions (1kg)

The prices, for that basket of items, were shown as:

* $16.70 Brisbane
* $17.93 Sydney
* $18.52 Melbourne
* $18.58 Hobart
* $18.94 Adelaide
* $19.47 Perth
* $19.77 Canberra
* $23.52 Darwin

BUT
* $8.81 at my Local fruit store............

what most of the sites (referring students) say, approximately for a single guy on shared accommodation needs close to 1200A$ per month (overall).
this has been discussed a lot in the past, why dont u search the forum with different keywords, i am sure you will get what u r looking for.
