In which way is Melbourne twice the cost of London? Could you provide some examples please?

Food prices are running at 2.5 x UK cost of goods ( logistical costs / population density cited as reason why ?? )
Wine / Beer & Spirit prices ( retail ) currently running at up to 300 % !

Great City , standard of living is far superior to UK ( crime , air quality etc ) but cost of living is a real eye opener !

Moderators,

I read the complete thread of "cost of living", however, i have this question still troubling me. Do we get the indian spices available easily ? Any chain of stores that provide these spices across brisbane, adelaide or melbourne, or for that matter across Aus? We require lot of these spices on a daily basis.

Most of the posts in "cost of living" thread mentions the prices of non-veg foods, but I'm a veggie , can somone please post some of the prices for veg food also ?

Yes you do! Lot's of them! I live in Box Hill in Melbourne. Box Hill is predominantly a chinese area. However, there are 3 Indian stores within a 2 minute walk of my house! And you get everything.

So, be reassured, I am also a vegetarian and you will not have any problems!

people say, the spices, herbs, rice that you get there is much superior quality thn that in India. When they come to India, they find our spices here shoddy.. most of the good stuff is exported and we in India are left with leftovers

That's such a relief. Any name of the store is Brisbane, coz my hus and I are planning to move to Brisbane initially, and later maybe to Melbourne or any other place. (ofcourse, we'll have to move to place wherever our job takes us)

How about vegetables, do we get the various kinds of vegetables like in India, i was told that most of it are hybrid variety and doesn't have taste. Moreover, itseems there is less variety of vegetables, like only cabbage, tomatoes, potatoes, spinach (of only one type) and peas. Is this true? My hus is a non-veggie and I'm a veggie , i wish someone could give me the costs of these veggie foods as well.

In my posts I did include veggies since we eat quite a lot of them although we're not a veggie, but I'm not based in Brissie.

We're in a regional area in SE South Australia and we don't get a lot of variety of each veg, but the taste and quality are good. Saying that we are growing some of our own now, partly to reduce costs and partly because my husband is a gardener and he likes doing it (and we both like eating fresh veg from the garden ).

srn, there are a lot of stores, all over AU, so u need not bother, u can google Indian spices in AU or Brisbane and u will get plenty of options. Dont worry, this is not something to worry about, really.

as for veggies, I have seen a lot of supermart sites, and most of them have all veggies we get here, ofcourse not everything but yeah almost everything. My cousin who just got back from Sydney after 4 yrs couldnt believe we eat the veggies (that we do) and that they are such inferior quality as compared. His words, a week old vegetables in AU would still be much crunchier thn the fresh veggie u get in India.

I had rice at their place, that they got from AU (Leftovers i guess), trust me, the grain after cooking was about an inch long. anyway, bottomline, u will get everything there, and dont even think of carrying spices from here.. u cant get thru the customs there

hey kejal_k...I also stayed in Box Hill while my stint in Melbourne...and i agree to you that you can get all the veggie stuff there in that area itself(i also prefer being a veggie)...beside that i also agree that this area is chinese dominated but i liked this area very much as it was cheap n at the same time calm also...i also remember there r some indian stores in Glenferrie(students area) which is near to Box hill...

Thanks everyone. I read karen's thread, i thought that was a good idea to have a garden for fresh vegetables. Anj, the info you gave me now really gives me some courage; i'm just learning to cook, besides my OH is non-veggie so i thought i'll have to cook some tasty veggie foods atleast till he learns to cook non-veg items !!

DIAC has so many questions, I haven't submitted the docs yet, i might finish it by this weekend and then THE looooooooooooooonnnnnggggg wait starts.
