Default Races of work forces in sectors

Hi,

I would like to know if Australian companies do have a balance of races of work forces in each sector eg banking, nursing, IT, manufacturing.

A friend of mine wrote to me that the bank he work in has a balance of different races of people in his Finance department and so he is very happy as he can mixed well with all of them.

Im not sure if you thought that by races, he meant competition or sports-wise, but i dont think thats what he meant. I think he meant diverse ethnicities or people from different cultures.

Hi Joe:

It's not so organised or deliberate. There is not an equal amount of 'race' in each sector to create such a balance. For example in IT it's fairly well mixed in that industry but it's also male dominated (as IT usually is).

The balance comes with skill..... So it varies from place to place.

Hi,

Sorry, I had a child jumping on me and didn't read properly this thread, I thought he wanted to know which professions would organize sport competitions in their work place...
Sorry about that.

I think in a Country where about 40% of the population is made of 1st generation migrants, you'll have a very mixed and multicultural environment in every sector and everywhere in the Country.

Things could be a bit different in the Outback, my husband (the Aussie one around here) said he went there on holidays many years ago and people were starring at him for taking his girlfriend into a local pub, there were no women there.

I am wondering if Australia law or has regulation to ensure that company recruit locals and foreigners fairly in the company to ensure a balance mixed of races.

I asked this is because I would like to work with a diverse group of people where I get to mixed with all races of people and exchange ideas and culture etc....

There is a real example of what happen in my company. There is one foreign IT director who joined my company recently and when the company started to recruit people to handle a global system, he started to recruit his own race of people and it creates some social problems among local staff as they felt there was protectionism as good jobs are not given to other races.

That is one of my fears as it will make recruitment of other races to join that sector much difficult.

you're talking about a specific company (yours), not an entire sector. Only one company where only one manager chose to hire people from his race. It didnt happen in the entire sector of Singapore where all the companies are only hiring one race to work in their entire IT sector of that country.

Look, many migrants who go to AU, go on either 175 or 176 most of the time. Meaning, their professions are have to do with a field that is very much needed and in demand. Therefore, they will prob get a job into their professions, ensuring diversity since many from so many countries migrate to AU. However, one thing to keep in mind, no matter where you go, which country you are in, if there is a choice between hiring a foreign national and a local one, most companies will go with a local one b/c governments themselves want to ensure that their citizens have a job to earn their living. Many people have said that unless you are in Oz or you are a citizen or you have local work experience, it is tough to get a job your field. That's the kind of prtectionism that you should be worried about. Its not about race but more about whether you are a Ozzie or have Oz experience. But I think that is the same case in many countries. It might have some races stronger in certain sectors, since some races tend to go for certain kind of sectors or jobs, so there is more of that race in those particular sectors.

Only thing you have to worry about or look into is if you will even be able to get a job in your sector since many new immigrants have to settle for a job outside of their expertise or their exprience when they first arrive. Many have to settle for a job at fast food restaurant or doing blue collar jobs where as before they had white collar jobs earning tons of money. Not knocking the blue collar workers but just saying that when people first arrive at a new country, they have to first learn the culture, the environment to become confident to get a job of their skills.
