Unhappy Passport confusion

Hi guys, i've got a biiig problem with a looong story.

My hus's passport is due to expire in dec-2009 and he was informed that his new passport needs to have my name also. I changed my last name to my married name and my hus has applied for the new passport.

My agent earlier informed me that for DIAC, she wd send all the existing details for my hus and me including the old passport details fr my hus. Now, she tells me that we cannot file for DIAC unless and untill we have the new passport for my hus.

My passport has my maiden name still and mine expires in 2014. My question is :

1. Can't we file for DIAC with the old passport details for my hus ?
2. Do i also have to apply for a new passport now which wd have my married name ?
3. Can we send the new passport details later when the CO gets assigned ?

Due to this, i have to wait atleast another 45-50 days till my hus gets his new passport. Please suggest.

Hi:

1. Yes, you can use the old details and update the details later. That is still his valid legal passport until you receive the new one.
2. No, as long as you have a marriage certificate that has the new name you can continue to use your old passport until it expires.
3. Yes, you can update the details later by filing a form (can't recall but I think it was called Change of Circumstances).

Good luck

hi srn

normally in India they attach the old passport with the new one. so u need not worry, as and when it expires you inform the DIAC. Also, if it expires in one year, you can get it renewed now, have u checked with the pp office? if there is a yr left for teh expiry u can actually get it renewed now (was it one yr or 6 months i cant recall)

secondly if u have ur maiden name on the pp, all u do is give a change of name affidavit, no need to panic . Since changing of name is normal the world over after getting married, just give a change of name affidavit and if u notice there is a field in the form for any name other than the current one that you have been using and the reason for the name change fill that as well.

Excellent !! Thanks to each one of you. I have the affidavit and the marriage certificate as well. My passport expires in 2014 (long way to go)

Anj : I noticed the column which does mention about change of names.
Dolly : Thanks for the link, my agent gave me this form to fill in

I have another question to ask.

Do i have to wait till the CO gets assigned to send the new details or would there be any fax # or any number where my agent can contact them before the CO is assigned?(i.e after getting the new passport details & before the CO is assigned)

Hi:

You don't need to wait, you can send it in at anytime after filing. I think wait until you have a reference number for your case (i.e. TRN number) so when you send in the form it gets attached to the right case.

when u hv your TRN number u go to this link
Check the progress of an application
enter your details, it takes u to your case progress window, at the bottom there is contact the deptt, u click on that and inform them about new passport, put in the details and they will contact you on the email id registered with them, that is when u send them the new passport scans
