Default evidence of english competency for secondary applicant

Hi
I am in the process of applying for a 176 visa and my husband is not too comfortable with IELTS. He has a B. Tech, M. Tech and PhD in Chemical Tech. Can anyone advise what kind of documents we need to provide to try and get a waiver for IELTS? the Immi website simply says show evidence of at least 2 years of education in English. Would a letter from the college be best or should we do something else? also, would it be a big risk to not go for IELTS?
any advice would be great!

Hi. If he isn't the main applicant he can avoid the ielts, but you are going to pay for it (don't know exactly how much, 3-4k). It's called "english less than functional".

But, if he's the second applicant I guess the required level is 4 (at least for Sponsorized visa), maximum 5, which is actually a very low level and quite easy to achieve.

btw, sorry for my bad english that, to make you more confortable, is worth 7 in ielts.

hi dani, thanks much for the response and the reassurance - it's much appreciated ! yes, actually I did go through the guidelines and find that 4.5 in IELTS is what he needs. I am really trying to avoid him having to go through the pain since he is sooooo uncomfortable but if nothing else works, he will go ahead. I am hoping to get the waiver if possible since his education has been in English from Bachelors level.
If anyone else has any information on what kind of doc constitutes evidence, it would be great.

Aurita, your husband can avoid IELTS but not only you have to pay extra ~3500 Au$ as second installment but also he would have to attend English classes in Aus.

I don't really know how IELTS test works there (i guess exactly in the same way of all over the world), but believe me, 4,5 is absolutely achieveable. Also considering he has already studied it.

Buy the book to prepare to the test and let him do it. It's totally useful for your life downunder, it's much cheaper and it's just a test. If you don't know exactly how it works or how to prepare it, just ask.

regards
