Default To 176 or not to 176....

Hi All,

I applied for a 175 visa for an asco code on the CSL (Java Specialist) on June 17th. Ideally, we would love to relocate to Sydney in March of next year but are not tied to the city or time.

I have read much on this forum as well as monitoring timelines on BeUdate as well as PomsInOZ and am confused/torn if I should go for state sponsorship or not. We thing we want Sydney but it'd be a shame to limit ourselves if not necessary. Who knows, maybe my dream job is in Melbourne?

My question for the group is if the gut feel is a visa on the CSL will not be granted within 9 months of application.

Looking at the timelines it seems 175 CSL applications are getting a CO after ~5 months?

Any thought would be appreciated!

In response to my post, it seems it doen't matter as NSW does not have any IT occupations on the list it will sponsor

Hi mate,

have you looked at the other state eligibility lists? you are only tied to the state for the first 2 years and they are big places so even if you dont like the company you are with there should be plenty more to go for.

it will make a huge difference to your own timeline

hi grant

if u are on CSL, the processing would take more or less the same time as state sponsored would. I wont siggest converting from 175 (if on CSL) to 176. U applied just a month back, wait for a while, you will hear form them soon, another couple of months or maybe 3.. which isnt bad.

My husband is the main applicant and works in IT as a software developer. We applied for NSW sponsorship and were amazed how quickly it came through (4 weeks) He got the sponsorship through his Oracle experience. This was just recently. We got notification of state sponsorship in early June.

We then changed the 175 application (applied for on 6th March) to a 176. Suddenly the whole application is moving along really quickly and we had a case officer within a couple of weeks with all documents 'met' and we did our medicals today.

It seems that the 176 is moving really fast. I would say if you are in a hurry then thats the one to go for. We were pretty sure that we wanted to go to Sydney as thats where our friends are so state sponsorship wouldnt be a huge problem (unless we cant get jobs when we go there of course!) And its only for 2 years and not the full 4 years. If you are not in any major rush and want lots of flexibility as to where you go I think I'd stay with the 175 as for occupations on the CSL they seem to take only a bit longer!

I just noticed that your link is for the regional sponsored visa. There are IT skills listed on the State sponsored list. Skills included are Sybase. Oracle, C++ and C#

Have a look at this link:

Thanks very much for having a look but my skills assessment was processed as a "Java Specialist". I have to say it is odd the C languages are in need but not java.

I actually applied for Vic state sponsorship yesterday. I figured it was free so why not give it a go and after a few months when that is processed I can see where we are at, or rather where other CSL 175 applicant are at.

It is a tough decision!

Thanks again for having a look!

That sounds like a good plan.
That way it doesnt cost you anything, time or money wise, and you can see where you are at later on if you get Victorian state sponsorship approval. Best of luck.
