The massive jet lag of 12 hours was considerably more benign than I had anticipated (maybe it's because I flew west - I could always handle the westward jet lag far better than the eastward), and now I am ready to tackle all the "logistical" issues: apartment, car, drivers license, mobile phone, credit card, etc...fortunately, my company is a big help, as they arranged (and paid) for 4 weeks of temporary housing and rental car.

The only (slight) problem is that it will take until about the end of September for my personal stuff to arrive, which means I will have to live out of a suitcase for two months; but that is an inconvenience I am more than willing to accept in exchange for living in a country I wanted to see for years and years

Even though I was well aware that it is currently Winter in Australia, I didn't quite realize that, at least in Perth, that means it's also the season for heavy rain and storms. Oh well, at least I don't have to contend with snow, ice and temperatures of up to (or down to?) -40 Celsius

and no worries about the logistical stuff.
I am pretty sure whenever you need a helping hand, you will find Aussie to help you out.
As for the weather, I totally agree! After living in midwest Canada, I think I' d rather put up with 'some rain and wind' than blistering cold!
