My daughter's name is Sydney. Will this be considered "odd" in Australia. It is a popular name in the US.

No, it won't be. There are many other names that are 'odder' than that.

My husband and I were considering that as a possible name for our (as yet unborn) daughter. He's Australian, and he didn't seem to see it as odd.

It is a great name. Kind of a strange question, but you never know. Kind of like the name "Randy". No big deal in the US, but in the UK.....

I recall there was a woman who posted here awhile back named Sheila. She was a bit worried about how her name would go over here, and I'd think that would be much worse than Sydney. If you think about it, Austin isn't an odd name in the US, and that's the name of a city.

What is wrong with the name "Sheila"? It sounds like a nice name. Is there another meaning? There was even an 80's band that sang about it...

Sheila here...

In my 30+ years in the UK, I have probably heard "G'day Sheila" millions of times, so I was thinking to at least double that in Oz, however, from comments received, I'm hoping it might not be as bad as I'm expecting....BUT it's a great way to get chatting and start a conversation over some humour
