Default Places to avoid in 'Inner West'?

Hi,

We are looking at areas to live around Sydney for our family with two small children. Looking at the 'Inner West' there are some areas, such as Earlwood, with significantly lower house prices (3 bedroom homes between $600 000 - 700 000) than some of the neighbouring suburbs.

Anyone knows if there is 'anything wrong' with Earlwood and these other places and if there are any suburbs not so suitable for a young family?

Many thanks!

I have just spent a week in Sydney finding a place to rent and eventually found something in the inner west region.

I am not an expert on Sydney, having only spent a week there! But I drove around the area a lot while house hunting and thought it was nice, even lovely in some places. I think it will be fine for children.

If someone who lives in Sydney answers this and contradicts me, please trust them over me because, like I said, I was only there a week.

Every area has it's lower and higher priced suburbs. Usually the lower priced suburbs have smaller older houses or are near something industrial. The pricier suburbs tend to have larger houses, more parks, more recreational opps, better transport.

OK, thank you.

Are there any suburbs within this area which you wouldn't recommend or aren't as nice?

Hard to say, I've never liked the Inner West as I've always lived in the Northern Beaches, they feel trafficy and crowded to me. Maybe it's the noise I don't like. Would you consider Parramatta? It's very central and has alot of things in it (restaurants, transport, shops).

Paramatta is a little bit too far from the coast for us.

We are looking at the Shire and Inner West - two very different areas, offering different things I think! In the end, it's probably a matter of life style choice.

We live in London now so I guess we are used to the 'busy-ness' of it all.

Just wanted to check if there were any suburbs in this area that particularly stood out as bad choices or inapropriate for family life.

Sorry, can't help there. I've only travelled through that area and only lived in the Northern Beaches. Anything I'd tell you about good/bad would be opinion only and I couldn't back up with facts. The Shire should be close enough to some nice beaches, or you could always do Central Coast as that has trains to the city, but then you'd be living outside of Sydney.
