Default Renting without a job?

Hi,

Sorry if this is a silly question.

I'm contemplating moving to Australia, I've reached a point in my life where I'm wondering what I'm doing where I am. I'm 26 and have a decent job but I feel I'm just sitting in the same old town just wasting my life. I'm seriously considering just quitting my job and moving to Melbourne on a working holiday visa.

The main thing I was wondering was how easy is it for me to rent property if I don't immediately have a job? I know that in the UK a lot of places only allow you to rent from them if you are employed. I have £20000 of savings, will real estate people accept me if I can prove that I have savings and can afford the rent for a year?

Cheers for your help,

MM

... Well they rent to students... although international students tend to pay /through the nose/ for their accomodation... Surely proof of funds will suffice in place of proof of income?

Hi i haven't gone on a one year holiday visa my self but a lot of my friends have in fact my brother is in Brisbane at the mo. i think what most people tend to do is stay in a backpacker for the first week so they can find a rental they are normally done 3 to 6 month lease i think here is some of what you might need to secure a rental:
Passport
UK driving license (photo)
Reference from FIL in the UK (different surname, and ex company director)
Reference from relative in Australia if you have one don't worry if you don't
Bank Statement
Offer of three months rent in advance

when you do get accepted you normally pay a bond ive heard people say over and over when you move in you fill in a sheet and take photos of every thing and log any thing broken if there is any thing so you cant get stung for it doest happen often but you never know. other than that its fairly ok to rent in Australia

hope your plans all come together and you will have a great time if you do decide to go we are moving in June if our visa comes through in time
Niamh

Also generally rentals will all advertise being 12 months too, but if you offer to pay an extra 10, 20 dollars a week they'll let you have it for fewer.

And yes, make sure you report every little thing that is wrong or grubby when you move in. Even little marks on the walls or carpet. Landlords have a database of blacklisted people, and you'll find it hard to get a new place if you go onto it. A friend of mine once failed his first rent inspection because a ceiling vent was covered in years worth of dust buildup. :P

oh yeah, and most backpackers in Australia are disgusting. Even low-quality but expensive motels can be disgusting. I think the standard is "run on the smell of an oily rag" where the guests do most of the cleaning themselves.
