Hi Vinay, search for IELTS threads, there is a lot written on it, it will give u plenty of info on modules and stuff.
also, when u register for ielts, they give u free study material. I dont know where you are from (i am sure u r from India, here they give free books). just go through the material they provide and it is enough.. no need to take coaching. that is if u r confident enough with ur english and your basics are right

Thanks .
I am from Pune, India. I have registered for IELTS from British Council Library and in have recieved one prepration book on IELTS general. Is that sufficient ..?

Can you please suggest any other name of the book which can help in scoring in IELTS. I guess we need to Score 8 in each of the four sections of IELTS exam to get 25 points.

Regards,
Vinay Dave

no other book required. the one they gave u is enough. whatever u find will be more or less the same. again, search for ielts threads and it will help, there is a lot written in them.

yes for 25 points u need 8 in each module. it is a piece of cake, just go thru the material nicely. the listening is where most people loose since they do not concentrate, the answers hv to be filled in while the tape is on. so practice that. trust me, the book given by them is enough. try not to use abbreviations and wrong spellings while u write an email or chat or for that matter anywhere. the current e-language is a killer and takes our grammar for a ride.

it is easy if u prepare and stay alert but difficult if u think u can make it and ignore the study material they give.

we prepared using the same book and my OH got 8.5 and i got 8 overall.

wish u luck

Thanks A lot .
You have given me lot confidence by saying that the book is sufficient for preparation.

I agree with you langauge that language we use in chatting & mail are taking away basics of english grammar from us.

Vinay Dave

Hi,
For writing & speaking test in IELTS, we do not know on which topic we will be asked to speak for few minutes and on which topic we will be aksed to write. So if we don't have much knowledge about the topic asked in exam then how to prepare for such kind of situation.

Please reply

Regards,
Vinay

vinay for the speaking they make u speak. they ask you general stuff about u, they r not checking ur IQ level but ur english speaking abilities. they make u comfortable. they deal with all kind of cases, trust me, when i went there were people preparing as if they r sitting for boards but its no big deal, be confident. they asked me if i like gardening, why is greenery important , childen and their behaviour, certificates and their importance for children etc. these r very basic things, u can speak about them at length.
as for essay writing we got how technology, its pros and cons in student mind. again, u can write about it how it affects thoe who can not afford, how they feel inferior and how it helps children etc.

for the speaking module they ask u questions and make u speak and they even ask u to relax. the one taking the speaking module is soft spoken and well mannered, they do make u speak as i said earlier. its like having a conversation over coffee with a friend whom u met after long

Vinay I am a SAT trainer so I come across IELTS and TOEFL tangentially.

All I can say is be careful of the listening section.
Prepare for that by listening to BBC preferably on radio rather than TV. You can listen to in the background.
