Internet censorship in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

if this goes through i think i might have to reconsider moving to oz (being a bit computer/internet geek). where the hell do they get off, and why aren't the people in oz up in arms about this?

Because it's not well publicised on a regular basis
Because a lot of people (and businesses) aren't on the internet
Because at the moment it's stalled...
Because what they plan to filter probably would offend most people and so they feel it would not directly affect them...

It certainly has been getting attention in Australian news of late though. Reports have mostly been negative: ISP's aren't co-operating, the public isn't happy and the opposition parties do not support it. I'm not sure this will ever get off the ground, and unfortunately I think the government is wasting millions of dollars that could be best spent elsewhere.

It's such a terrible idea, don't even get me started

If you're on Facebook, do a quick search for groups. There's a few very large ones with some very unhappy Australian residents.

Urgh it makes me sick. Total ignorance. And it's not like we can't get around it using a proxy server anyway...

What right do they have to ban an anti-abortion website, that has done nothing illegal and is only expressing an opinion that many share?

I'd just like to add that I'm thinking of moving from the US to Australia and I find this censorship news extremely disturbing.

just hope it doesnt censor buying whiskey or morgans spiced that would be a disaster
