Smile Moving to Brisbane

I am waiting on a visa which I hope will be here any time soon(?!), and will then be booking my flight.

I don't know anyone in Brisbane and was wondering if anyone can advise what and/or where would be the best place to stay for a while untill I can sort accomodation?

Does anyone know if there are furnished lets available? I have emailed various agents - but they all seem to be unfurnished.

Also I know its a bit trivial, but what about plugs?? I will be taking hairdryer etc... what sort of adapters are needed?? Are they like the European adapter - or do I need a different one?

Thanks for your advice.
Cornish OT.

Hi guys, my name is michelle and i currently live in Gold coast, if you have any questions you can email me and i will help you with anything i can. i know how hard it is to go through this whole process after only just going through it myself. i have lived here in gold coast for 11 months now and believe me you have a long way to go yet! not wanting to scare you or anything. Honestly though please email me with any questions and i will help you if i can. I sometimes wished i had, had a contact in australia who could just answer questions that popped into my head sometimes, and i know there are a millionsof these.

Good Luck!!

Michelle

Hi we are in the process of trying to emigrate to Australia and until now we have had our hearts set on Adelaide. My OH sister is about to move to Brisbane and we are in 2 minds on whether changing our minds. It might be good having family near by etc etc.
Can anyone give us some pros and cons between the 2 please. Very much appreciated

Loui

Adelaide is subdued & conservative with awful town water (a rain water tank is a must for drinking water) but plenty of pom's in the Elizabeth area
Great small goods due to the German infuence. Weather is hot during summer (upto 40c+) but dry. Beaches are good and so's the fishing.
Brisbane is what you make it - fun & loud or quiet & relaxed. No beaches to speak of due to the protective islands just off shore (Morton & Nth/Sth Stradbroke Islands) but you'll have the Sunshine & Gold Coast for that. Climate is milder (upto 32c in summer) but it can be very humid (90%+) which makes it sticky.

hmm I like Brisbane better. Very spread out, cost of living is the best value in Australia (as of 2005), rapidly growing, more in the midst of things being on the Eastern coast. Great for driving up to Cairns (you want beaches you can't get much better than snorkeling down the great barrier reef), there's some areas of rainforest up there too. Also you're among the glasshouse mountains which are really nice for a drive inland. The weather's not too bad, it doesn't get all that cold. The humidity isn't such a big deal and there are some spetacular lightning shows. Also there's the Gold Coast and all it's theme parks if you're into that. I like Brisbane :P

btw, furnished appartment's aren't so much the "done thing" in Australia, so finding them will be more costly. Also you're better off buying second hand than going to a rental outlet they are a real rip over time. Try Cash Converters or a local rag: In perth it's the Quokka, I'm not sure what it is in Brizzy.

The Australian plug is different to the UK one (I'm not sure what the European standard is..) Still I find when you travel buy 1 power point converter and take a powerboard with you, and that works well. I've only ever had problems in parts of Japan where the voltage is different.
