Default How to find employment

We are prepared to move to Australia, and I am a professional engineer - apparently highly sought after. But, I'm not sure where to begin looking for jobs, or whether we should emigrate, and then look for employment when in Australia? Or should I secure employment first - and then apply for the VISA? Should I work with a recruiter, or do people on the forum discuss opportunities as well?

Any help and guidance is appreciated.

Hi Shauna,

It really depends on what you are looking for from your move to Australia...

On a sponsored visa (either by state or employer) you are tied to that area and job for a number of years (usually 2), and most of them are temporary visas. If for some reason the employer decides to let you go then you only have 28 days to find another employer who will offer a visa otherwise you have to go home. Sponsored visas are given priority since the start of the year.

On a skilled independent visa you can work as what you want and live where you want but you don't have a job to some to (unless you can secure a job from overseas which can happen once you have a visa). You do have to make sure that you have enough points to be successful with this visa.

Most jobs on agency websites are for people who already have a visa to work in Oz - and they will say this.

Some opportunities will be discussed in the new job section of the forum (which will be released soon).

Have you been through some of the sticky post towards the top of the forum? In particular I was thinking of the 'Thinking of emigrating' and 'PLEASE READ....' posts since they have info to get you started.

Regards,
Karen

While most employers will want to meet you face to face first, these sites will give you an indication of what jobs are out there
