Default Advice requested

Hello, I've just joined and this is my 1st post!!

I'm seriously considering relocating to Australia in the next year or 2 with my wife and 4 children. We're considering Adelaide as a start. I'm a UK GP and with the future bleak in the UK health system I've heard lots of good things about the Australian way of life, and the healthcare system. What would be my prospects of finding longterm employment, settling into local communities and obtaining help with relocation.
Thanks for your help and advice

Thats interesting, I thought a GP's job was a very good one here in the UK, with very good wages. Is that not the case any more?

Sites like this may help
Australian Job: Emergency doctors required for Australia - Queensland jobs in Medical / Nursing - Australian Employment

The wages are good, but nothing like you read in the press, these figures are gross and dont take into account the increase staff required to complete/jump through the government hoops! The medical system will change in the next 5-10 years and the medical/GP profession will take a leap backwards for GP's as employers and employees, patient care will suffer as a result (in my opinion). I love my job, but not the interference by management/politicians hence my thoughts around moving to Australia
Sorry for the rant!, regards........

Is that going to mean a lack of GPs then, in conjunction with all those that are retiring now?

yes, lots are retiring, not many are coming into my profession and many are looking to move abroad. In my 6 partner practice already 3 are looking "elsewhere" around the globe!
Original question: would a move to Australia be worth considering (lifestyle etc considered?)
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum

I am not Australia bound myself heading to Spain , but thought i would just say Hi .

Dont quote me exactly on this as i am no expert but couple of years ago i looked into possibility of moving to Australia and i recall looking at the Point system and in them days a GP was a high ranking required skill so you should have no problems . i am sure soon a expert will be along to answer all you requests , as like i said i am only going from memory and not a expert .

Hi Squeaky,
You would br welcomed with open arms anywhere in Australia. There is a shortage of doctors everywhere especially GPs in smaller towns. My favourite GP, alas deceased, told me if he hadn't gone to a small country town first he doubted that he would have stayed in Australia. Some of these towns are offering huge incentives to get doctors to go there - and they are not in the middle of nowhere! Just pick where you want to go and contact the authority in that state. Good luck.

Squeky, Dude, You're a GP! enough said! You won't have ANY probs with access/employment to Oz. You're at the top of the modl list. I would advise to do research obviously (if you've time, i know how hard you guys work) but then you're a GP - plenty of time! sorry - joke!

That's unless Harold Shipman is your Idol!!! then don't bother - we're heading to Brissie in September!!!

Best of luck mate. Tis the best possible life for your wee ones!
