Default Financial planners in Oz

Hi all,

If there are any financial advisers in the UK/Ireland (or anywhere!) thinking of making the move to Oz we would love to her from you.

I am a qualified accountant but specialise in financial planning and it is an area that I would like to continue in Oz.

I wont bore everyone else with the details but if there is anyone out there please drop me a line

cheers

Karl

hello karl

got the same issue myself-I currently work as a IFA in Kent am am looking to move to australia due to family reasons

not sure if we work in exactly the same field but I am a financial planner myself dealing with pensions, taxation and other matters.

My biggest hurdle is that fact that my qualifciatons don't stand up in oz-I am AFPC qualified in UK. Seeing as you are an accountant this will (in my view) put you in good stead even though intitally it may not be something you want to stay in.

The area I am trying to get to is brisbane but there seems to be not a great deal of jobs/activity in this area (especially in financial services) hardly suprising given the current climate.

What I have hit on is what are called expositions which take place across the UK-there is one happening in London end of march which i think has got to be worth a bash. There are australian employers present so if you are fortunate to get a job/ interview your visa worried could also be solved in a stroke.

regards

andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the mail.

I do work in a similar role, giving pensions, investment and tex product advice in Dublin. I believe that the accountancy qualification will help and even though i have not accountancy experience, i am told that the financial advisor role is deemed as closely related and allowable from an experience point of view.....time will tell!!!

I have heard that ACT and NSW are sponsoring financial planners, although that is no use to you is you are looking at Brisbane, that said, after 2 years in NSW you could go anywhere then.

Although we would not be going to Oz for a couple of years (assuming we get a visa next year), i am enrolling for the DFS, the diploma in financial planning/services. Not sure if you know, this course is necessary for the eqivalent of the financial regulator compliance. The can be done from overseas and it's not particuarly difficult if someone is working in the industry. let me know if you want info on this.

I would most likely focus on working for a particular company in OZ, like AMP, selling their products. Whilst I am an independent advisor here, it would take some time to get to know all the companies and the products. So, based on my logic, I think I would do better focusing on one company's product initially. I think it would be easier to secure a role such as this also, compared to a financial planner.

Hello Karl & Andrew,

my name is Marc and I am a mortgage broker based in the South of England. I specialise in mortgages and protection.

My wife and I dream of moving to Perth. I am aware of NSW and Canberra providing state sponsorship.

If we are going to move to Australia in what order should things be done? (i.e. visa first and then start looking for jobs)

Regards

Marc

Hi Marc,

thanks for the response.

I think that the order for doing things is:

1 Get Visa
2 Decide location (visa may dictate this)
3 Complete Diploma in Financial planning
4 Look into jobs

from what i have seen, there is no point talking to anyone about jobs until you have a visa. I believe that someone from overseas would need the diploma as firstly most financial services jobs request it and also it seems to give a very good background into the financial services industry in Oz. This can be done from overseas, even the exam

cheers
