Exclamation Newbie .. thinking of taking the plunge!

Hi all,

well after lurking around for a while ive decided to take the plunge and join the forum!
Here's my story so far!

I'm 25 living in the UK, met an ozzie girl and married her in Australia (got married in Hervey Bay) 2 years ago and after wedding decided to carry on living in the UK.

After the recent economic crisis, poor weather and arrogant rude English people (Im English BTW) i've decided its time to start making the move to Oz.

Its all very daunting.. im very close to my family and it will be hard leaving them but im more worried about how it will affect them as opposed to me (im very good at adapting). My wife is from Manly and we are thinking of settling in Adelaide (her family).. questions start here!...

- How long after being accepted on a spousal visa do you have to move?
- Rough costs for a shipping container(!?)
- How did everyones families react? how did YOU tell yours?!

I hope to play an active role in this forum and will keep you updated with my progress!!

Red face immigration

[Hi Newbie,

My husband , myself and out 2 kids are also starting on the road to a move to Australia, we have decided on Perth as our chosen destination!! We have gone with an immigration company called Thinking Australia, but after paying over the money, then read on another blog that they are not very good and not to use them!! There have also been good stories from other satisfied customer too - but it's all very confusing because we just don't know who to believe.

Who are you using, could you recommend anyone? QUOTE=Pooks;101993]Hi all,

Hi Wendie,

Good for you!

In regards to immigration company we are not going to use one! just do it all ourselves.. BUT (and this is a massive But) my wife is Australian, so she knows most of the ins and outs and i pretty much qualify for spousal visa - so i assume its going to be easier! (My friend took 11 days turnaround for visa! - based on spousal- but thats probably very lucky)

My friend moved to Perth 2 years ago and loves it! he has work doing backyard patios (or whatever they are called) in Perth and earns $110,000 a year and only being doing that for a year!

How are your family taking it? how did you tell them!?

Hi Pooks,

Not sure about how quickly you have to move. If you do a search on spouse visa you'll find other posts about this topic

40ft Shipping container cost us about 6000 GBP from London to Melbourne. If you hunt around the forum others have posted about this too.

My parents reacted badly at the time. Tears, guilt, arguments etc. That was when I first told them and again once we got approval (for us that was over a year apart since we were on skilled independent visa). NOW I speak regularly to my parents through skype (I'd set them up with a PC and web cam before I left). They've been out here once in November 2007 and will out here again in March. They're thinking about moving over here too but I think with their age (in their 70's) and health problems (heart) they'd be better off in the UK.

Regards,
Karen

Cool taking the plunge

Hi Pooks

Looks like you're going to get in pretty easy - (you lucky thing)!!

We haven't told any of the family yet, we thought we would wait until things were
looking a little more positive, but i'm sure they will understand why we are doing this and support us all the way!

Wendie

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum.

I'm pretty certain that you'll have 12 months from the date of your medical/police checks before (just like most other visas) in which to move over.

We had 30ft of a 40ft container and it cost around £4.5 - £5K (can't quite remember).

Well, my DH mum was great about it (she has a brother who lives out here so it meant we'd be seeing him and his family a lot).....brothers and sisters were OK (some jealousy there though). Friends were good, but tinged with sadness. We didn't tell my parents for ages, my dad was terminally ill and I just couldn't bring myself to tell him. I left it a while after he died before telling mum.

Dolly

Hi Pooks

We have just informed the family of our plans to emigrate, all I can say is "you can not please everyone". You have to think about your life and what you want from it (we only get one shot at life so live), sounds deep I know.
I just thought i want better for my children, her in the uk they spend so much time stuck in the house, they as the next generation, will still be trying to put this country right in 10 years time, I have just lost all faith with the system in the uk.
I have to say, when I reeled all that off to the family they were very understanding, but quietly sad.
Anyway after boring you with that, good luck and enjoy.
Tricia
