Default HELP!Moving from Canada to Australia

Hi all,

My names Vana and I have a few questions to ask..
My friend and I were planning on moving from Canada to Australia and we have quite a few questions so I hope you can help us out!
We are both 22 so applying for the visa won't be hard but as this is going to be a major move we were wondering what we should be expecting/aware of.
1) what is the cost of living compared to Canada, specificly Toronto where I currently live?

2) we both work in bars/resternats, is there a demand for that industry or what industries are fairly easy to get a job in? I would assume retail and resterants is that correct?

3) what is minimum wage there? and is it enough to live on?

4) how much money should we bring? we were thinking around $5000 would that be enough to live on? and for how long would that last us?

5) where should we live? we plan on getting settled and then traveling around.. any specific places that are good for newbies to go to first?

These are all the questions I have for now.. Feel free to give us any advice or information that you think could help us out!

Which visa are you using? Working holiday visa or something more permanent?

If you check out the 'Cost of living' sticky thread towards the top of the Australia forum that will give you different costs in different areas in Oz. You already know the costs of where you are so that should be enough info for you to make the comparison

As long as you're coming over on something other than a tourist visa so that you can work you should be okay. Have you checked out the job links in the 'PLEASE READ: Helpful websites for your move to Australia' sticky post? That may have those sort of jobs. I think it'll depend on areas where you are thinking of moving to....

This website has minimum wages:
fairpay.gov.au - Home

I think that they may be different for different jobs so you'll have to check.
Is it enough to live on? Depends on where and how you are living.

If you check out the 'PLEASE READ: Helpful websites for your move to Australia' sticky post that has rental links. If depends on where you are living and how much you are paying for rent since that will probably be your major expense. This varies a lot depending on where you are in the country.

Once you know where the jobs are and the cost of living that should help to determine where you move to - sorry if I'm stating the obvious

Oz is a big place but you can get around by plane (can be expensive) or coach (long but cheap) or in some places train (not always cheap for long journeys across the country).

How long will you be here for?

Regards,
Karen

Well we plan on leaving in September/October and hopefully staying for a year but I am hearing diffwerent stories as to how the visa works.

Someone told me that you can only work at one place for 3 months and I am just trying to assertain what is truth adn what is not.

But I am starting to get worried because neither of us has post secondary although we do have high school and I am wondering if that might hinder us in getting the visa and then find work there.

I do plan on getting my ESL teaching certificate but as Australia is an english speaking country I don't know how much that will help me...

Any thought/suggestions are appreciated!

Hi Vana,

Check out the DIAC government website for visa (there's a link in the 'PLEASE READ: Helpful websites for your move to Australia' sticky post towards the top of the forum). That has the rules about the visas.

Regards,
Karen

Hi Vana,

If you are coming over on a WHV, here are it's obligations:

Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
