Default Moved to Portugal Now 2 Perth! Excited but terrified & need answers & fast PLEASE!

Hi there, we are a family of four who currently live on the silver coast in Portugal and a fab new post has come up for us in Perth!!!!!! Excited and terrified! I may seem blunt but it's only because I need answers and there is no point in beating about the bush so: I really need specifics guys please.......

We own a property now in the Uk and in Portugal both mortgaged the PT house now on the market but will prob be on the market for some time yep the recession is with us here in PT too.

So moving to Perth is a brilliant op but does involve risk? Where are the good areas to live that also have good schools, primary and secondary but will charge a rental that means we can eat too and allow my husband to get into the CBD without spending half his life on the freeway?

Whats the real cost of medical insurance and dental insurance I have seen threads here on this type of subject but I am looking for figures awaiting quotes from comps too but there is no one one in the know more than someone who has done the deal previously.

We are so very fortunate that the company is going to arrange all the visas etc and the movers and we will have a relocator too but forewarned is fore armed....

Are there any more things to consider aside from being away from family etc etc

All help gratefully received. And if anyone fancies re locating to Portugal I know of a really good house...........

Hi cgaschristie,

Not sure if your still a resident of UK for tax purposes but if you move to Oz on a permanent visa you need to tell HMRC and sign up for non resident landlord scheme:

HM Revenue & Customs: The Non-resident Landlords Scheme

Can't help you with Perth.

Medical and dental insurance can be combined we pay about $284 a month for a couple (basic package but with gold extras for dental and opticians).

If you check through the posts you'll get an idea of the negative and positives of Oz.

Regards,
Karen

Hi there,

I don't know Perth all that well but I know that Clarkson and Butler are places to avoid (so I've been told). We're actually going to visit Perth in a few weeks so my friend is going to take me around and show me different areas (good and bad ).

Our private medical insurance is around $400 per month, but my OHs company pays for it so we were lucky enough to be able to opt for the whistles and bells policy. iSelect is a good website to get an idea on what different policies offer and how much they are.

My husband's company sorted out the flights/relocation/furniture rental etc and TBH it was a complete and utter nightmare....the bloke organising the flights was useless and couldn't forward think anything... e.g. he informed us that there were no flights on such and such a day but neglected to check when there were fights available ......what did he think we were going to do, flap our arms and fly here ourselves!!!!! Just be aware to keep on top of it and keep checking they have done what they said they were going to do.

Dolly

Hi am in The Netherlands just finished with a job here as a chiropractor. I worked in Perth for a couple of months and liked a lot about it. The costal areas are all pretty nice just expensive and hard to find accommodation so make sure you have some where to live. There are some not so nice areas mostly inland a bit. The trains are great in Perth, great places to eat and the city gets a 200% for cleanliness even the trashcans. A beautiful city indeed. I basically found it quite sterile after living in New Zealand and California and was not impressed with the transient and empty feeling to the place just endless houses and I mean endless. The towns don´t seem to have any heart or soul to them. You will end up drinking with your workmates and hanging out at home which isn´t all bad but good to think it through and see how that would go for you. The wages are high but so is the cost of living. It is one of the most expensive places there is to live. I ended up deciding to leave even though I had great job offers and at present am wondering where to go. so hope that helps a bit cheers thom

The OP posted this over 5 months ago so I'm guessing she's already in Perth!

PS Thom, we recently visited Perth and I can totally understand what you mean about the housing - it seemed relentless and, as you say, sterile - but the city was beautiful. Thanks for your input
