This question is to everyone working in IT in Australia.

I am CRM background.Fours years as Siebel CRM consultant but last 1 year as Product Manager in Oracle Fusion CRM(set to replace Siebel CRM in 2010).I have found product manager role(NOT project manager) more challenging.Anyone knows

- Demand for product manager in Australia
- Software Companies in Australia which are into development of software products
- Agencies which caters product manager profile

Hi Manish:

Product managers typically are for organisations that produce software. There isn't a large demand in AU for that as there are for other types of IT skillsets (especially the project managers). What I would do is first make a list of your tech skills (and that means solid and demonstratable tech skills) and then do a search on sites like: careerone.com.au and company websites. Nearly all large software companies do have a presence in AU (i.e. SUN, HP, IBM, Oracle, etc.) so look at their respective websites and you will likely find a match to your skillset.

Note that most companies would look at those with PR and are not necessarily interested in sponsering someone, but again it doesn't hurt to try.

The majority of product manager types of jobs will be concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne as that is where you get most of the MNCs.

Best of luck

Hi.

Thanks for your reply. My primary skill is "SIEBEL".I am aware that Siebel market is fairly good in Australia(through jobsites like seek.com.au).But I am not really keen to work in "Siebel" and more interested in Product Manager or Business Analyst(CRM) role.I hope they are better paid also

PS: I am actually working in Oracle India as Product Manager but I Oracle Australia don't recruit Product Managers.

Manish

Hi Manish:

Now that I know a bit more I would look more at the Business Analyst CRM roles. It's hard to say if the pay is better. Yes, on an absolute numbers standpoint you will do better in AU. But from a standard of living standpoint you may not.

Do the calculation of the following for a check:
1. Cost of purchasing a 2 BR Flat within 15 kms of the city center in the city you live in now and the same for the prospective city in AU
2. Cost of food for 1 week in the same place
3. Cost of schooling for children in the same place
4. Cost of owning a car in both places (+maintenace+insurance)

You'll come up with some number/month in both places. Multiply by 12 to get the annual figure.

Now what salary will you need in both places to support that. The big deduction will be income tax. In AU most people in IT fall into 23-27% effective tax rate so to get your take home pay do (gross salary * (1-x)) where x is .23 to .27. Compare that annual figure to your expected costs in both places.

So then you'll get a better idea of which place will be better.

Also note there will be some new costs when moving to AU that don't exist for you in India (i.e. flights home annually or every other year, for most this tends to be between 2-4 weeks of salary, for families 4-8 weeks of salary).

Hi Manish:

I don't have that info about what the analyst earns. Best would be to look at the online job postings and see what range they offer, for your calculations should use the lower end of the range so you can have a 'worst case' and then see if it makes sense for you to come here.
