What is the sponsorship all about ? Read a few articles about it on the forum, so what happens to start with and when it finishes after a year do you have to apply for permanent residency etc. (First time on here so its all new)

Hi Baldy,

Welcome to the forum.

If you are talking employer sponsorship.... Check that your skillset is required in Oz (see "PLEASE READ....." post). Find a sponsor (this can take a while depending on skillset). Move over to area where the job is for about 2 years. Apply for permanent residency at end of that time but I think before visa runs out.

I know that one of our members (Tiffani I think?) has done this.

It really depends if you have the points to get in without sponsorship. If you do it takes longer to get here but once you are here it is permanent.

Of course personal circumstances are all different which is why a chat with an agent can be useful.

Regards,
Karen

Thanks Karen
I think i have the points to get in without the sponsorship route as i am in the construction industry.Just weighing up my options as by the sounds of it the sponsor route is just a job guarantee when you arrive.
Thanks Baldy

the disadvantage is that you are tied to that employer for years to come and your screwed if you get the job and dislike your colleagues or hours or something after a year for example. I personally would much prefer going out their with an approved visa and just having the option to pick whats right at the time, but have the security to know that if something goes wrong, you can change companies.

It is always advisable (if possible) to go down the PR route. But if your circumstances are such that sponsorship is your only route, then that's the route you'll have to take. As Grangey said a sponsorship visa has restrictions but at least you'll be in Oz!

I always recommend asking the advice of a migration agent (there are agents who post on here.....Alan Collett, SOMV. pc, Liana Allen).

Hi,

My partner and I came out on an employer sponsorship (his). A condition of his employment contract was that he was required to obtain permanent residency as within a year of arrival, and as such, the employer paid for the process. I think what happened is that they would've just sponsored him for PR in the first place, but they needed him over here quicker than the timing for the processing of the PR.

When we got everything together for our PR application, it was very simple. We had "front-loaded" all the necessary medicals from our 457 visa (we got a few extra exams than were required for the 457 because we knew we'd be filing for PR), we filled out some forms, and because it was an employer-sponsored PR application, it took two months instead of one year which is what it takes if you apply yourself.

It was a convenient way to do it. And of course, now we can both work wherever we want because we have the PR! (He still works in the job he came over here for though )

Sponsorship can be either temporary or permanent.
There are two subclasses that are likely to be applicable:
457 - temporary business long-stay visa
856/121 - employer sponsored migration (permanent residency)

If your employer would like to, they can sponsor you for direct permanent residency, thus cutting out the need for a temporary 457 visa first.

There are three parts to the 457 application (sponsorship, nomination, visa).
There are two parts to the 856/121 (nomination and visa).

If you need any more information please let me know.
