Default Applying as electrician with bachelor degree!

I worked as an electrical technician for 5 years and got my BS degree after that and ever since I've been working as an electrical engineer. but I've recently been assessed by Engineers Australia as "Engineering Technologist", because they believe my BS degree is comparable to the educational level of the AQF Associate Degree and also my Associate Degree is comparable to the educational level of the AQF Certificate 4. Anyway, for three reasons I'm going to apply for visa 189 as an electrician rather than a technologist or a technician:
  1. It's highly in demand according to Skillselect Occupation Ceiling much more than a technologist or technician.
  1. This way I can claim for 7 years of work experience rather that 2 years (since it's been 2 years from the time when I got my BS degree which is now considered as Associate Degree).
  1. electrician could be found on Occupation List of ALL states and territories which is not the case for technologists and technicians. I mean I could find state sponsorship much easily.

My questions:

  1. Is it possible for TRA to refuse to recognize me as an electrician just because I'm holding a bachelor degree or what I've done does not match the job description of an electrician or whatever.
  1. Does applying for a permanent visa (189) as an electrician means that I will never find a job as a technologist/technician in Australia. Please note that I've been already assessed as technologist by Engineers Australia.

Thank you

Are you an electrician? Having a degree does not make you an electrician unless it was an electrician course, was it?
Electricians in the UK and Australia need nowhere near a degree but they do need a specific electricians qualifications which contain specific modules of learning or an on the job apprentiship.
Have you looked at the skills assessment? Do your qualifications and experience match what they require?

To add to what Shel has said, you need to be careful when selecting the occupation that you are applying against because DIAC'S assessment of your occupation is completely different to your skills assessment. It's not a case of choosing an occupation at random because there are more places available but rather ensuring that the skills and experience you have closely matches the occupation that you are applying against. I'm not telling you what to do but even if you manage to get your skills assess successfully as an electrician, if your skills, duties, experience, etc does not match those in DIAC's job profile for an electrician, then they will reject part or all of your work experience, leaving you short of points and facing a visa refusal and loss of your fees.

In answer to your other query, once you have PR, you are free to take up any job that you wish. You are not restricted to working in the same occupation as what you listed on your visa application.

what if I apply as technologist. Does DIAC refuse my work experiences BEFORE 2010 (in which I got my BS degree which has now been assessed as AQF Associate Degree)? I don't understand, does someone like me has NO way to apply for a permanent visa? Do you mean a diploma with no work experience has no difference with me?

Put your points up to apply as a technologist and we can tell you if you can apply and where you could get more points if needed.

I really appreciate your valuable guides.

I'm 30, I've got 8.5, 7, 7, 7 for ielts reading, listening, writing and speaking (I think it's not impossible to get 8 in each skill, but for now, I think it's better to consider the facts rather than probabilities). And finally I guess I've already told you enough about my qualifications and work experience.

That's not actually helpful. Have you been on the skillselect website to find out if you qualify and how many points you would currently get?

Yes, I have. I've got 30 points for my age, 10 points for my IELTS, 10 points for qualification (as it's been recognized as associate degree). that's:

30+10+10 = 50 so far.

and now the important part: how many points they'll give me for my work experience? NOTHING sounds too unfair, right?

By the way, "Engineering Technologist" is not included in Occupation List of any states or territories. it's sound extremely strange. why? is it possible for them to consider it among Electrical Engineer category or something?

Hi,

If I can recall correctly, by 50 points you still have chance to get in, by RSMS, where you can obtain 10 points from the state sponsor, but you can't live in big cities (except adelaide if you consider it as one). That's one way.

Of course if you can really hit 8 each band with your IELTS, will be a lot better. By utilising state sponsor for another 5 pts, you simply can stay in any city you want.

For both case, yes, you should make sure that your qualification is in demand.

Good luck!

I've already researched. NO STATE OR TERRITORY NEED TECHNOLOGIST. please help, I can't believe it. How can I ask DIAC? They're never responding their phones. I'm getting disappointed
