Default Semi-OT from the news: Australia warns on migrant cuts

Interesting article on BBC today that will most likely be of interest to some people here. An excerpt:
Australia may cut the number of immigrants allowed into the country if the global financial crisis raises unemployment levels.
Entirely expected and probably good for the country but to many of us, if realized, that would (in technical terms ) suck.

See BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Australia warns on migrant cuts for the full article.

Yes this was on the news last night but as it says *it may cut* immigrants in my opinion it's not really news until they've made a decision next month. We won't know anything definite until then as to whether they will cut migration and if they do in what areas.

So don't worry until we actually know what's going on.

Regards,
Karen

BTW I could cheerfully slap the Minister - as if it wasn't stressful enough for people migrating without this being talked about ahead of time!

Indeed.

I'm actually not so worried about the potential gov't immigration decisions, but more as to what the global economy (and job situation) will look like in a year or two - the signs aren't exactly encouraging. But on the other hand, like I pointed out in another thread, even in a recession/depression, companies will still be hiring and all - it's just a little bit more competition to land a job, anywhere in the world.

I think that really depends on how much people panic and believe what they are reading. I know that in the UK some people are selling their houses now because they are worrying about the price falling, although if they don't have to sell the price will go up, although it may take a while. The same thing can be seen on the stock markets too.

For the first time last night on SBS news it had the story about cobblers (shoe repairers for those of you who may not know the term ) and about how business is booming since people are repairing their shoes rather than buying new ones.

Regards,
Karen

not to cause any trouble but I welcome the news that they are limiting the # of skilled migrants in my indusrty anyway.

I am a network security consultant and since Oz has made it much easier to for local companies to employ foreign workers we, in my industry, have found it much harder to negotiate a reasonable salary due to the fact that there are ALOT of people from the same certain countries that put the word 'IT security' on their resume and get the job because they don't demand no-where near the same salary as we do.
Being a responsible security consultant I am worried at the IT security posture of many Australian companies because 9 times out of ten the employer will go for the lower cost employee rather then the higher cost one and unfortunately the people doing the hiring dont have the skill set to realise that they are hiring a low-skilled worker in this industry.
So you find the better skilled people in the IT security industry move abroad in order to obtain the salary that we demand.
Hopefully the cut will actually go ahead whcih will then force companies to pay the top people in our indusrty the money required to keep us here in Oz rather then losing us to overseas companies and replacing us with low skilled workers.
/end of rant

The only thing that worries me about population increase is water supply and land sustainability. Otherwise I say the more the merrier.

Depending on where you are there isn't a water problem. We don't have water shortages at all where we are.

I grew up in country Queensland and water conservation was drummed into me from before I could walk. Having lived in Japan for several years I must say it feels like a luxury to fill a bath right up and not feel guilty if I water the lawn (not that I have a lawn here, but if I did I am sure I wouldn't feel guilty about watering it!)
