Default PR 175 application - Qualification points

Hi All,

I have collected all the relevant documents to apply for 175 PR application with the current system as SkillSelect is applied from July 1 2012. But before that I have few queries regarding my points (I know it is a the last minute) -

I have Bachelor in Science (Physics Hons,Mathematics and Chemistry) degree and Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree. I have been working in IT industry with my masters qualification. I have already done my ACS assessment for Masters degree as that is relevant to my occupation and also planning to apply for the same occupation (Software Engineer in SOL schedule 1). Now my question is how much qualification points I am entitled to because it seems to get 15 points for masters, I also need to get my bachelors assesed in the same occupation.

1. Am I right ? or if someone can definitely tell me the qualification points I will earn.
2. Is it really required to get accessed for Bachelors or my masters assessment will earn me 15 points?

Thanks

You are only awarded points for your highest qualification (not all of them). Hence, it is sufficient to only submit your Master's degree and that will earn you the 15 points that you need.

You will not earn any additional points by submitting other degree certificates and if I am not mistaken, you earn the same number of points for a Bachelor's and Master's degree. The points awarded increase only if you have a PhD/ Doctorate.

Thanks for replying. I am aware that there will be no additional points for masters degree. But i see the below text on immigration website -

"Qualifications – Points
Points can only be awarded for one of your recognised qualifications. For example, if you have completed a Bachelors degree and a Doctorate degree, you will only be able to claim points for the Doctorate degree.

Points for qualifications at Masters level can only be awarded where you have also completed a Bachelors degree recognised by the relevant assessing authority as being of a comparable Australian standard. To claim points for a qualification obtained overseas, it will need to be recognised as being of a standard comparable to the relevant Australian level qualification. Generally, you will be able to request an opinion on your qualification claims from the relevant assessing authority when you seek your skills assessment.

You may also be able to claim points for a qualification not related to your nominated occupation. If the assessing authority who conducts your skills assessment cannot provide an opinion about this qualification, you should contact the Vocational Education Training and Assessment Services (VETASSESS), who are the national assessing authority for a broad range of management, administration, professional and associate professional occupations.
"

Can someone clarify if i am still eligible for 15 points ?

Hi,
At first I thought your point might be valid so I wrote a mail to ACS to include my Bachelors Qualification in the assessment letter and they replied that as guidelines we include only the highest most relevant qualification.

Therefor I think when this is the case we are not the only ones with such kind of scenario, there will be others with the same letter aswell and if ACS mentions only Masters then DIAC will mostly be aware of it and shoud not create any problem whatsoever.

Let me know your thoughts.....

Cheers,
R.

Hi Maz,

I think it is not about earning extra points. It is about, if our ACS letter has only Masters Degree mentioned, it will not create a problem fetching us Qualification points.

Let us know your thoughts...

R.

Hi,

Yeah. you may be right. Even i understand it that way. But i got confused, when i looked at the content on the website. I have also written an email to ACS but have not received any response yet.

Did you submit your bachelors degree credentials to ACS for assessment along with Masters degree?

Thanks

I have not received any response back from ACS yet. Will let you know.

Also u mentioned earlier that you asked to include your Bachelor qualification to be included but ACS responded saying only highest qualification will be included. Did this happen even after submitting your bachelor docs? Does this mean you have your result letter with only masters mentioned and your wife has both of them even though both of you had submitted the docs of both degrees?

Please clarify.

Also I am planning to apply before 1st July and i have the relevant docs ready except that I am not sure on my points for qualification.

Just to add to what every one has mentioned - when you get your ACS assessment, it states the Australian equivalent to which your degree has been mapped.

For example, for me, the following was stated -

"Your bachelor of engineering in Information Technology from (college) completed (date) has been assessed comparable to AQF Bachelor Degree with Major in computing".

The DIAC site says that AQF Bachelor with Major in computing scores 15.

Similarly, ACS will tell the AQF equivalent for MCA as well from which you can calculate the points.
