But before that I wont have any Aussie phone number to put in resume, so that may deter hirers to go ahead.

Any suggestions for this ?

Thanks !
Even if you apply through Seek, you will be required to enter a contact number and to be honest, if you do not have a local number, it'll be a bit of a wasted effort in any case. Also, bear in mind that an agent or employer may take a while to go through your CV, so the process of going from submission of CV to first interview can last a few weeks - it's not just a case of submitting your CV today and having an interview tomorrow. Phones are also used just to make the initial contact and set up meetings and interviews - very few agents and employers actually conduct telephone interviews these days.

You could try contacting agents directly and advising them of your date of arrival and follow up with a phone call when you are physically in Australia to advise them of your contact number and discuss any jobs that they may have on their books at the time - most agents will actually tell you to just get in contact with them when you are physically in Australia in any case. Even if an agent identifies you as being suitable for a particular role, he will continue to push other candidate's CVs and there is therefore no guarantee that the role will even still be available when you arrive.

You will however have a head start if you have made some initial contact with agents or at the very least, identified a few potential agents who you can contact when you first arrive in the country.

Regards,
You should ideally have enough money to sustain yourself for at least 6 months. Bear in mind that you will not have any access to any benefits, so if you run out of cash, then you would simply have to pack up and go home.

Most people manage to find suitable employment within a few weeks but it is not unheard of for people to struggle and take months to find their first job, particularly if the market is slow.

Each person is different, so there is no magic figure - it all comes down to your lifestyle, where you you choose to live, the accommodation you decide to take up (there are seasonal fluctuations in the cost of short term accommodation), when you choose to move and the expenses that you expect to incur. The big ones are accommodation, food and travel but there are other miscellaneous expenses such as clothing, printing/ scanning costs, internet use, etc that you will need to allow for and this again varies from person to person.

Hi Maz,

Keeping in mind the basic requirements, like accomodation, food, travel, bills etc - what should be an ideal monthly expense.

Apart from this, if I am on 176 Visa, do we have to pay for the kid's school fees as international student charge or is it free from day one.

I am now in perth and so far the experience has been good. I like the fact that the city is spread out and there are lot of facilities available. The weather is also a welcome change! The city is expensive though and you need to be mindful of expenses. sandwich and coffee for two can set you back by as much as 40 AUD!

House hunting surprisingly wasn't tough. Managed to get a fully furnished studio in the city within a week. Will receive the keys and Move in next week.

Jobs in my field as i had indicated are tough to find. All applications so far have been rejected on the grounds that I do not have local experience. This includes temp jobs and contract jobs as well. That is frustrating. I am now considering bridging courses to build local knowledge and network. Consultants so far haven't been able to help.

So it is wait and watch for the time being.

Hi guys,

Was reading this thread from the start and it is really nice and informative. I have a small query. How do we get in touch with recruitment agencies ? Sounds naive but how! Is it like I go to their website and register there ? or direct contact thru' LinkedIn ? One thing that is really troubling me is I just have 2 years of experience and I feel apprehensive if that may be less than what I read on job adverts in seek. Most jobs they ask for 3+ years of experience which unfortunately I dont have. Nevertheless, I will try. Thanks again for taking time to read me.

Hello Pradip hope you are doing well & by now would have found a job. Haven't seen an update from you in a long time so presume you are busy with your new job & settling down.

I too am in the HR profession & would really appreciate if you could please share how your job search went & did things turn positive after the initial hurdles (lack of local experience, limited assistance from recruitment consultants, etc)

Thanks in advance & really hope to hear from you.

Nope haven't found a job...it is not easy in this market... While I know it may not sit right... You should consider moving to sydney or Melbourne as there are more jobs there. I have already registered myself with WA govt. hence have no option but to rough it out for some more time. If things don't work out though I might have to break my commitment...I am giving three more months and then will make a decision.

If you decide to come to Perth anyway....make sure that you have enough money to last you for atleast six months if not more and be open to looking at casual and temp roles in areas such as retail admin etc.
